POB illegible
« on: Friday 06 March 09 12:27 GMT (UK) »
May I ask for views on this Place of Birth.  It is from the 1851 census The person is Margaret Brown her husband was born in Ireland and the enumerator's writing has been transcribed as Borrow kent England.

It looks lke Flintshire possibly, any thoughts?
Thanks Abiam

Hi Abiam

I agree it looks like Flintshire but what the Borrow is I'm not so sure.

I thought it either said Kentshire or Hantshire, but I think the same family is still in Rahere Street in 1861 RG9/201  Folio  19 Page 31 (full details if you don't have access)

and Margaret's place of birth is given as Surrey, Bermondsey  :)

Oh don't they like to complicate our lives?  I am now looking again at the '51 census again and will check out her cousin Sarah who appears to be born in Suffolk.  It's Rakese Street (thanks to Cougar) And i must check her death again as i think he married 3times!  ;D
Cheers,
Abiam

It's Rakese Street (thanks to Cougar)

I'm sure it's Rahere St.
Enumeration sheets for 1851 and 1861 show it as Rahere

And I will put a marriage look up on the Middlesex board,

I've responded to the marriage lookup - the only marriage with a Margaret GIRLING (I take it you got this from the birth certificate for Robert who was 9 in 1861) and a Joseph BROWN on the same page between 1840 and 1855 was in Rotherhithe, Surrey, June quarter 1847.

Here is a website which mentions Rahere St in St Luke, Finsbury several times:

http://www.lendingtheway.com/daniel/not00692.html

It describes the sort of housing there and says that Rahere St ran from Goswell Rd to Central St.

Central St, incidentally, is where Joseph BROWN the Watch Finisher is recorded in 1881 with wife Louisa.  He was in Rahere St in 1851, 1861 (both times with a wife named Margaret who was 27 in 1851 and 37 in 1861)  and 1871 (as a widower).
