Thinking a bit more about the place of birth ...

As Ecneps said, it could read Kentshire.  And Kent is adjacent to Surrey ...

And could Borrow actually be a phonetic rendition of Borough.  And could it stand for the Borough of Bermondsey.  Or for a place called The Borough which was part of the Borough of Bermondsey.

If you search on Streetmap uk for The Borough, you get just one hit - The Borough which is in the general area.

JAP
PS: Old-maps produces 5 addresses for a place called The Borough - Dorset, Kent, London, Middlesex and Surrey.

JAP,
Thank you and my apologies to Barbara and Cougar it is Rahere Street, my mistake.

And yes it could be Borough which is where much of the family lived.

Very interesting reading about Rahere Street.  I see Joseph in '71 is a widower having moved further along in Rahere Street.  I suppose if they were 3 storey biggish houses then if you were left alone you moved to the nearest one bedroom at a lesser rent.

Shall Find Margaret's birth and death now and follow up Joseph in '81, there are also family in Goswell st and Central St.

Thanks all,
Abiam

Alpine cottage, I think we are into London now, thanks Abiam

On the previous page, last entry, is someone else from Kent, and it's simply written as "Kent" - also, the capital K looks nothing like the first letter of Margaret's birthplace, which seems to be an "F".  I doubt the enumerator would have written Kent on one page and "Kentshire" on the next (and I've never before seen or heard of Kent referred to as Kentshire)  :-\

Having said all that, I haven't got anything helpful to say about where the place could be!   :P

JAP,

I had found a Joseph on the 1861 census and he was a widower living at 81 Rahese Street Clerkenwell.  And that was the one I was remembering when I said about him moving along the road.  That was at the beginning of my search for Joseph - I should not trust my memory!

I am now sorted I found his marriage to Louisa and believe the 2 boys were hers.  She died in 1885 and on the 1891 he was with a Susan.  Cannot find a marriage for Joseph and her but one of Louisa's sons is living with them.  Maybe he didn't bother a third time!  I have his death in 1894.

Prue,
Thanks for your thoughts I think she was born in born in Borough/Bermondsey and will probably pursue that.

Cheers,
Abiam
