Land records - Llanfachraeth area
« on: Friday 06 March 09 18:13 GMT (UK) »
Hi

My parents live in a cottage in Llanfachraeth and we have found the named building back to the 1841 census (& their neighbours).

Mum & Dad would be interested to investigate if there are any older records kept anywhere which might show if the cottage was originally tied to one of the local farms or had its own small holding.

Does anyone know if there are Tithe maps or other land & property records for this part of Anglesey for late 1700s & early 1800s & where they might be kept.

Many thanks
SandraC

Anything that is available will be in the Archives in Llangefni - They are very helpful if you know what you are looking for.  I know Llanfachraeth quite well - I teach in the village school!

Hi Sharon

Many thanks for the information - I'll send Dad off on a visit then to see what he can find.

The Melville Richards Database of placenames has 400 entries for LLANFACHRETH (ANG)
and is a good place to start if the property is pre 1800. It may provide a reference to
further places to search.

Many thanks Graff

It is listed as on the 1838 OS map & the neighbouring farm appears on a manuscript c 1740 (now I have sorted the spelling issues out!)

Many thanks for the link - I'll be looking up all sorts next time I visit.
