(p.58) The mention of this John Smith recalls his namesake John, son of Wisdom and Elizabeth, whose wife Nanny died at Worcester in 1908 ' aged 108,' and a whole bevy of ' centenarians ' connected with this couple. Nanny was by birth a Byles ; and she is commonly reputed to have been, and probably was, sister to Charlotte Byles who married another of Wisdom's sons, Billy Smith of Buckingham, though Charlotte herself on one occasion denied relationship. Charlotte was daughter of a gorgio named William Byles and Sarah, daughter of Priscilla Smith : and for Charlotte, Priscilla and Nanny's oldest daughter Rizavoi, wife of Tom Fletcher, centenarianism is also claimed. About Priscilla, who is reputed to have lived to the age of 105, I have no evidence to offer. Rizavoi was baptized at Wigginton on September 4, 1830, and died in the autumn of 1923, and was therefore 93 not 108 as her kinsfolk asserted. Charlotte's age was never very definitely fixed during her lifetime ; but as far back as 1912, when old Reni Smith (nee Buckland) was reputed to be 102, Charlotte declared that she remembered Reni still a girl when she herself was grown up and married........
