Jeffryes - arrived NZ 1874
« on: Monday 09 March 09 19:30 GMT (UK) »
A relative Henry Jeffryes b. 1849 and wife Ellen (White) sailed on the Schichallion from London 10th February 1874 - arrived Hawkes Bay (Napier) 26th May 1874. After that they just disappear.
I have just checked the new NZ BMD index and there are no births or deaths for Jeffryes and none under variant spellings.
Anyone have any ideas as to how I can find what happened to them after they arrived in NZ?
Thanks
Derek

Hi Derek    :)

Yes, they do just disappear, don't they ?

I checked a few more resources for you, but to no avail I'm afraid.

Our "PapersPast" website is a useful tool for tracking down people, but from a search there, it seems the name "Jeffryes" only featured in advertisments, espousing the wonders of "Clements Tonic" !     (Not helpful).   ;)

Here's the link ... you might like to have a browse ?

BUT  ... there's always the possiblility, that your people moved across to Australia  ... so I think it would be worthwhile, you posting a query on the Australian board.

Hi Lu,
Thanks for looking them up for me.
Henry was a carpenter so probably had no connection with Clements Tonic, I wonder why they chose the name Jeffryes to use in the advertisement, especially the unusual spelling.
The name Jeffryes is always being misspelt.
I had wondered if they may have gone to Australia but it would have been very soon after arriving as there seem to have been no children born in NZ.
Thanks for the Papers Past link.
Best wishes
Derek

Hi Lu,
Thanks for the suggestion to search Australia.
I have just completed a round Australia trip. I started in NSW and worked clockwise and of course they were in Queensland.
First child born 1875 so they did not stay in NZ and must have left very soon after arrival.
Thanks
Regards
Derek

Hi Lu,
Yes solved thanks to you, it never occurred to me that they would have gone all the way to NZ only to almost immediately leave and go to Australia. Wonder what caused them to change their mind?
Many thanks
Derek
