Good afternoon,

I am researching the Beavis family for a friend.

My friends grandfather served with the 1st Dorsetshire Regiment reg nos 7498.
I have found is medal card on Ancestry, but can't find his service history.
This would of assisted me in finding who he may of put down of his next of kin

He was bc 1887-1888 birth place unknown, William's marriage cert in 1915 states father unknown.

Any help would be so much appreciated to find his service/pension papers

The records may not exist :( Ive checked ancestry and no joy even spelling it Bevis it could be mistranscribed elsewhere....
Looks like he was a regular...if he had pre war service he MAY have a set of records at Kew but ive never researched that type of record.
He was discharged SWB in 1915 so will be on the SWB Roll but theres no personal details on it.Maybe a local paper will have something in it.He should have pension record but lots were got rid of!

If you cannot find them on Ancestry then it is not looking good. They have published both sets of papers for surnames beginning with B. Does the MIC say if he was awarded either the 1914 Star or the 1914-1915 Star, and when he ‘entered theatre’?

Or does it mention SWB or List?

The only other thing you can discover is when he enlisted. If you have Ancestry you can search for other Dorsets men with similar numbers to see when they enlisted. Failing that you get a Dorsets expert to tell you when 7498 was issued. If you do not get an answer here I would try the Great War Forum. You need to put Dorsets or Dorsetshire Regiment in the question title.

PS...Just seen Ady's post. The SWB List in Kew will give you date of enlistment and discharge.

Thank you Ady and Ken for your help.

He was discharged 26/7/1915 as far as i know he had is leg blown off whilst serving, i think this is why he was discharged.

I think i will take a look at the Great War Forum and see if i can post there.
