Help please! Stradling of Coity
« on: Saturday 14 March 09 23:04 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I would be SO grateful if anyone can find any information on this as I've been looking for years :)

My great-grandmother was born Jennet Stradling in December 1872. She lived at Church Cottage, Coity and married Samuel Dyer. On her gravestone (St Mary's Church, Coity) she is listed as Jane Stradling Dyer

I cannot find any record of her birth, and from (verbal) information, she was illegitimate. I have a copy of her marriage certificate and the father's name has been left blank.

If anyone has ANY info on this it would be amazing as I can't get back any further on this side of the family tree.

Many thanks in advance, and hoping that someone can help out here

Hi Carole,

I've just found that too on the BMD ! As I've only done 'lazy' ie internet research so far, what is the next step? To obtain a copy of the certificate?

Is there any way I can find out who else was at the address without spending a fortune LOL

Thanks ever so much for your reply - this one is SO intriguing as there appear to be skeltons in the closet :)

Hi

There were two female Stradling "possibilities" for her mother on the 1881 for Coity

A copy of her birth cert will give her mothers name which (hopefully) should help to find which family she belongs to on the 1871 census.  The address on the birth cert will be the one Jennet was born at - which may not necessarily be where her mother lived on a permanent basis

I suspect her mother married after her birth and Jennet is shown under her married name on the 1881 census

Once we know who her mother was, we can take it from there

Thanks again,

I'll have to get a copy of the birth certificate as I can't find the house listed on a reverse search...

I'll let you know when I get it as you obviously know what to do , unlike some of us LOL

Best wishes,

Etta

Hello,

I don't know if you know, but an Eric Stradling (T.E.Stradling) has written a book entitled Lon-Las.  In this he mentions (very briefly)  the Stradlings from Coity, Bridgend, I wonder if they belong to you?  I can send you more details if you wish,

Hi Pip,

Any info would be great!! CaroleW and I have now done lots more research and found loads more ancestors - the majority from Coity. Not heard of the book, but will have a Google.

Thanks again,

Etta

Have you got a Margaret Stradling born Coity approx 1840.
Possibly daughter of a Jennet Stradling - (only one I can locate on 1841 census)
Margaret Stradling went on to marry William Davies.
Their eldest daughter was named Jennet.
Jones, Davies, Evans, Williams, Daniel, Thomas - Glamorgan
Keen, Goodwin, Pyatt, Leese, Bailey, Loffill, Stubley, Brassington, Blurton,  - Staffs

Hiya,

We've come on considerably.... Margaret Stradling (b 1849 Coity) was the mother of Jennet Stradling (b1872) who was illegitimate as suspected. Margaret's parents were William Stradling (b1807) and Mary llewellyn (b 1811)

I'll check out the Davies marriage as I haven't come across that one at all!

Thanks for the info
