Completed with thanks.Boy or Girl at 1894 Wedding?

Hi, really need some help with the following.

I have a family group wedding photograph taken in 1894, showing my Gt Grandparents at the wedding of their eldest daughter - as is always the case,there are no names on reverse of photo.

Whilst I can identify most of the group, there is a mystery surrounding a small figure, dressed in white, clutching the hand of my Gt Grandmother.

The child is dressed all  white, Bonnet,Dress, Stocking &  Shoes.

The youngest child my Gt Grandparents had was my Grandad who would have been about 8 at the time of the marriage.

There's no way of telling if the figure  is a boy or girl , I've always assumed it was a girl and never even considered the possibility of it being my Grandad because of the mode of dress.

Is it likely that a small boy would have been dressed as detailed, in 1894?

I'm afraid I'm not clever enough to know how to include the photo but I'd welcome any ideas on the subject.

Have seen photos of boys in dresses. Not sure they would have been eight, but definitely up to about 4-5. This would have been in the 1880s.

Hi 

My father wore a dress until he was about 5 and he was born in 1905 so it would certainly be possible in 1894. I've not heard/seen of any boys dressed in this way at the age of 8 though 

Have you been able to scan the image?  If so, and you're having problems putting it up, I can PM you an e-mail to send it too and I'll put it up here so that we can make a better guess.

I really can't think that an 8 yr old boy would have been dressed in this way.

I have 1894 photo portaits of my family and, while the littlest boys are in lace-collared dresses with long hair in ringlets, the 6 yr old is in a very smart sailor suit and long boots.

Will see if I can attach a pic of Laurie, aged 6, in 1894 (sadly he died of diphtheria a few weeks later )

I'm not sure - the face/hair cut that we can see does look a wee bit like a little boy but..........

I would say its a girl who is about three years of age.
I couldn`t see a little boy wearing a frilly hat like that. Not even way back then.

I agree with Johngirl - that (girl) child is much younger than 8. Maybe a little one who slipped in and away between cencuses?

I'm always useless at guessing adults' ages in old photos but to me g-grandma looks kind of old to have a child that young (2 or 3). Could he/she (I'm another who's tending towards she) have been a granddaughter or other relative?
