Help with occupation

This was shown in the occupation column of an arrival in New York in 1856.  On board were six passengers, an American engineer and his wife, an American gentleman, two German merchants and this man.

Can someone please help me with this occupation?

Is a daguerrotypist something like an early photographer?

I'll expand the list a little more - it was the passenger list of the Grenada arriving in New York :

Port of departure: Ciudad Bolivar, Venezuela,
Destination: Breman, place of origin: Bremen,

and the printed part of the list is in English.  The man was German.
