Help with occupation
« on: Monday 16 March 09 20:06 GMT (UK) »
This was shown in the occupation column of an arrival in New York in 1856.  On board were six passengers, an American engineer and his wife, an American gentleman, two German merchants and this man.

Can someone please help me with this occupation?

Jean

Is a daguerrotypist something like an early photographer?

I'll expand the list a little more - it was the passenger list of the Grenada arriving in New York :

Port of departure: Ciudad Bolivar, Venezuela,
Destination: Breman, place of origin: Bremen,

and the printed part of the list is in English.  The man was German.

Thank you so much.

This is from Wiki:

A daguerreotype (original French: daguerréotype) is an early type of photograph, developed by Louis Daguerre, in which the image is exposed directly onto a mirror-polished surface of silver bearing a coating of silver halide particles deposited by iodine vapor. In later developments bromine and chlorine vapors were also used, resulting in shorter exposure times. The daguerreotype is a negative image, but the mirrored surface of the metal plate reflects the image and makes it appear positive in the proper light. Thus, daguerreotype is a direct photographic process without the capacity for duplication.

Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre (November 18, 1787 – July 10, 1851) was a French artist and chemist, recognized for his invention of the daguerreotype process of photography.
