so is it german for daguerrotypist?

To me it looks like Daguerretypist - in English, but written with the old-fashioned  letter p with an upper stroke that I was taught at school.

In the interest of keeping my hand in, I always try deciphering requests before looking at any answering posts.

The word immediately said 'daguerrotypist' to me (though the scribe might well not have spelled it precisely like that given that he might not even have heard of the process and given the possible German accent of the passenger).

And 'daguerrotypist' is what Tati posted in reply #2.
I guess Tati didn't think the occupation needed explanation.

Jean, you might find him on censuses?  It would be interesting to see whether he continued in the profession of photography; your chap was certainly in it from pretty early days.
