Help with Birth Announcements
« on: Tuesday 17 March 09 15:19 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I've been struggling with deciphering a couple of words in three birth announcements and I was wondering if anyone else would have better luck.

The first one is straightforward enough, I just can't work out the word on the far right, presumably it's a job title, but not one I recognise at any rate.

The second I'm having trouble reading the father's name, also can anyone read what it says between William Innes and William Grant?

The third one is a bit of a doozy and I can probably get every word in three. so any help there would be much appreciated.

Thanks very much

Dermot

Looking at Post No. 1, no idea as yet about the occupation in the first one.

In the second, could the father be 'Wm Geddes'?  The wording between William Innes and William Grant looks like 'W Alves', as also appears in line above.

Could the occupation be Skipper?

yes, i think you could be right on both counts, it does look like skipper, i  had thought this i just am surprised whenever one of my ancestors says anything besides general labourer. Your right about the second point as well, west alves is just by the area where I had thought they all came from so it fits in nicely.

Just the third one to go... :P

Thanks for your help.

Hi Dermot  :)

Do you have headings for the columns in the first one?  I think it's actually a name:  J Kepper.

Second one:
William.  Law[fu]ll son to Wm. Geddes in W[est] Alves was bap
tized August 28th Wit[nesses]: William Innes in W. Alves and
WIlliam Grant

Third one:
12th
William Geddes Mert (possibly 'Merchant') in Elgin and Margt.
Urquhart his spous had a child bap: called
William.  Wm King of New milne Wm Anderson
William Cray Wm Smith Wm Blemshell (not sure on that one!)
Dame Jean Forbes Lady Innes and Janet...

You've got some serious witnesses on that last one!

Cheers
Prue
