WOOD Family
« on: Wednesday 18 March 09 20:08 GMT (UK) »
Hi, Can anyone help please?  I am researching the Wood Family from Haile, Cumberland. I have a connection from the Wood family  Samuel Wood c.1880 Buckinghamshire. George Wood c.1834 from North Marston, Buckinghamshire who married Martha Dudley 1837. Does anyone have any more information on these families please? Regards Irene Cooper

   Hi Irene....

The bapt of a George Wood at North Marston shows for ...

George Wood s/o Samuel Wood & Deborah 20 Oct 1833

George & Martha marry in 1858 ...... when and who is Samuel c1880 Bucks?

I do visit my local records office and will be going next week so can look at more if you give details of if you want to go back from George or forwards.

George Wood s/o Samuel Wood & Deborah 20 Oct 1833

Samuel and Deborah (nee Syratt/Syrott) are two of my ggg grandparents. Samuel died young and Deborah remarried.

Didn't George go to the US? He certainly didn't marry a Martha Dudley in 1837 - he was only 3 or 4.

I am descended from his brother William.

I have checked my records and George did emigrate to the US in 1871, in the 1900 census he is a farmer in Lebanon, Madison Co, NY. By that time his wife is Mary Ann (Mary in 1880). She emigrated in 1865 so it seems likely that they met in the US.

I suspect Martha's death prompted George to leave England: Deaths Jun 1870 Wood Martha 31 Winslow 3a 332

George followed his younger brother Samuel to Madison Co. Samuel emigrated in 1863 - I have a copy of a letter his son-in-law sent to my g gfather which gives details of Samuel's death after a stroke in 1902.

Both were, I'm sure, getting away from a pretty miserable existance in N Marston. William stayed in Bucks and worked his way up from drover to cattle dealer to farmer. Not sure what happened to their sisters (Susannah & Rebecca) - must do some work on them some day.

What really puzzles me is a link to Cumberland?
