Here is a list of ships from a navy service document. I've cut it down and removed most of the return to Portsmouth dates but we need help deciphering the names of the ships Maggy's ancestor served on please....

thanks
Jenny

Crumbs, not very good image is it  :-\

I can see that the first one is "Hector", and it appears at least once more in the list.  Last one is Himalaya...

Second one might be Glasgow?

Hi all you kind people.
I am new to this a very slow getting used to it.
So I am thanking lara.j for the reply about Duke of W'gton eg Wellington.
It is correct I would never have thought of that.
On this SERVICE RECORD I have the dates that My GXG Grandfather served on these ships and also the Commanding Officers. So I did check for the name of the commanding officer on www.battleships and there is a page of a Log Book with the name of The Hon.Walter.C Carpenter.
Thank you carol 8353 and PrueM too the names. You seeing them give me confirmation that I am on the right track.Looking forward to getting on to Rootschat more often.Kind Regards Maggy

You're welcome, Maggy!  :)

Welcome to Rootschat, take it slowly and look around the site, and in no time you'll be diving in asking and answering questions all over the place  ;) ;D

Cheers

Lara
HI lara,
Thank you for your reply.I was so pleased with your suggestion that I went right away into www.battleships and found a little history about the Duke of Wellington and  also found a copy of a page from the LOG Book giving the name of the Commanding Officer and his name being The Hon Walter C.Carpenter is also on the service record of my G G Grandfather when he served from the 1st Feb 1878 to 17 Feb 1880. This is enough proof for me that I am on the right track.
              Thank you again    Regards maggy

Hi,

You are very welcome  :)  I love puzzles!
Brilliant that you were able to find those bits of information to confirm things. Looks like you've got lots to follow up on.
Have you looked at the website of the National Maritime Museum www.nmm.ac.uk ?? There are all sorts of things in their online catalogue including pictures of ships and references to logbooks. Could be helpful.
Lots of luck!  :D
