Beautiful headstones, aren't they - never seen any like those before.  Whereabouts is Ancrum?

I wouldn't worry about the spooky image - it really is just a camera strap!   ;D ;D ;D

Ancrum is a village in the Scottish Borders, 4 miles north of Jedburgh. The village — which currently has a population of around 300

It is the area of Scotland that is totally unspoilt and has a great pub called the 'Cross Keys'  and I got bought a drink by a Scotsman - how rare is that :o :o :o :o ;) ;)

The graveyard is near a middle age settlement and Roman fort

Andrew

I bet they looked fantastic new, not taking away from the sad reason for their purpose

Those are very unusual I must say. Must have taken the mason quite some time to carve those!

Agreed but I come across the same or similar carvings right across the Borders I wonder if they were by the same mason, they seem to be standard

I think at least one of each different pattern should be restored, despite the laws which protect moss and lichen which make it illegal to restore them, or at least the mosses and lichens would need to be identified by an expert

The stones themselves should be protected against further erosion
