General Garde Cotton c 1866
« on: Thursday 26 March 09 19:13 GMT (UK) »
Yet another problem Cotton.
General Garde Cotton shown on 1881 census living South Duffield, aged 15, born Middlesex.  Shows as cousin to Mark, Mary and Martha Cotton.  Occupation Box maker/wood Turner

I can't find his birth or any other entry for him.  Is this is real name?  Seems very unusual.

All help would be most gratefully received.

Coventry: Wagstaff
Manchester: Mitchell
Halifax: Mitchell, Middleton

Wakefield: Cardwell, Cotton

Hi,

Is the writing on the image clear or do you just have the details from a transcript?

I think his middle name is probably YARDLEY as William YARDLEY is the head of household. Might be worth researching him with that surname.

Hi,

How far have you got with the extended family of the Cottons?

Do you have any brothers or sisters of "Mark Cottons" parents that could of moved to or lived in Middlesex?

The only others I know are Mary and martha on the same census return.  Not researched them as yet but both were born in Hensall where the rest of the Cotton family originate.
Looking at the census I can see how it maybe Yardley as the Y for Yorkshire can be read as a G.
Puzzling too that Mark, Mary and Martha are down as sons and daughters of the Head, William Yardley.  Seems to be a real mix of family on this census.

Looking again at the 1881 census, William Yardley is at 18 Duffield Hall, whereas Mark Cotton, Mary Elizabeth Cotton, Martha Annie Cotton and 'General Garde Cotton' are showing next door at 19 Duffield Hall so not necessarily related.  Gen G shows as cousin to head but Mark shows as Son to head but no head listed at that number, blank line above?????
