Cowherd family- completed
« on: Friday 27 March 09 14:06 GMT (UK) »
I am researching the Cowherd family which originated from Hugill Staveley. My earliest known ancestors are John (1795-1857) & Elizabeth (1796-1877) - John was the miller living at Middle Reston and I believe went bankrupt in the 1840's. His son Richard (1837-1915), my gt gt grandfather was a Police Inspector.  Richard moved around a lot, mainly Westmorland and lancashire. In 1899 he had a son George by his third wife Alice in Kendal. Richard died in Kendal? I would love to know if there are descendants of George still living in the area and also more about the early Cowherds in Hugill Staveley.

Hi!

Many thanks for all the info. Thomas Hayton Cowherd, the corn dealer is definitely mine - he is a nephew of my gt gt grandfather. Also the bankrupcy details of John Cowherd is much appreciated. I don't think that William Westmore kirkham is my family but I maybe wrong..........the research continues.

Hi Everyone!

Just to add to my first post - I am also interested in finding information about Thomas Cowherd (1861-1942). He was the first son of Richard Cowherd the Police Inspector. Thomas was a school teacher at the elementary school in Upper Allithwaite and then became Headmaster at Broughton Grammar School, Preston. Does anyone have any info on either Thomas or the two Schools?

Hi Gill,
I saw your message the other day. The John you speak of was my gt gt gt grandfather. My gt gt grandfather was Thomas (born 26/9/1832 at Stavely) who was a brother of Richard, your gt gt grandfather!
Their other siblings were Elizabeth, Jane, Mary, William, George, James and John.
I think this makes us third cousins!
It would be great if you could get in touch so that we can exchange any information we have, etc. I have my descendents going back to 1498 but only in a direct line.
                Mike.

Hi Mike

Yes, we are related! Since my posts I have moved on and now have quite a lot of info on the Cowherd branch of my family which I am happy to share but have done little work on the family pre 1800, so would be interested in the research you have done. I will send you a personal message in due course, so that we can exchange info. Regards GillM
