Hello Waterfall -- back at long last!

Thanks so very much for this additional information on the KNIGHT family  :D

I'm wondering if perhaps John KNIGHT (ca 1818) was not baptised at all. I've just found the baptismal record for his first-born child, a daughter Sarah, in the Aldenham (Herts) Bishop's Transcripts. Beside the entry in the margin is the note:
Privately rec'd into Church Sunday Oct 1
Unfortunately, there is no additional record for the KNIGHT family on that date. The mother Hannah ROWE was baptised, so it would seem reasonable that the note applies to John KNIGHT. Any thoughts on this? Might there be a way to trace a private baptism?

Another curious point is raised with the info on Hannah KNIGHT's burial:
" 30/10/1835 Hannah Knight dau of John/Sarah Knight Hougton Regis aged 39 years."

This gives her a birth year ca 1796 ... quite a while before the marriage of
"20/12/1804 John Knight of Houghton Regis to Sarah Stokes of Houghton Regis after banns."

A couple of questions arise about entries in the marriage register:
- was John KNIGHT recorded as a bachelor?
- were there any KNIGHT marriages 1790 - 1796 ?

Cheers, and many many thanks for your very kind help,

Kat

Hello,

to be honest I don't think John Knight originated in Houghton Regis. Have been thru the register today from the start in 1538 to 1812. Knights feature in baps from 1564 to 1701, a total of 18. Marriages from 1563 to 1750, a total of 6 apart from Johns to Sarah in 1804 which is the last one of course. Burials are from 1541 to 1629, a total of 10.

As far as Hannah's age at burial I could have read it incorrectly
my eyesight not brilliant so will check it out next time. If she was 29 that would make more sense. As all were baptised at the same time one could say she was the first born. The fact that they were all baptised from the workhouse possible means John and Sarah were made to do it, rules.!!

I would give Olney in Bucks a whirl for bap of John as one of the kids possibly born there. Olney parish register is not on the IGI.

The register did not state John a batchelor but one would assume so.

Hope that helps........Waterfall

"I, Harry Knight, was born in Cravells Road on 1st March 1879..."

So begins the written memories of Harry Knight written at the request of Eric Brandreth of the Harpenden & District Local History Society. It was published in their June 2011 Newsletter.
His father was David Knight, a builder, so I am pretty sure he is the Harry mentioned.
I can send a copy if you wish.
I found your thread during a general search on "Harpenden"
