GT GT GT Grandfather George ROBINSON
« on: Wednesday 01 April 09 16:50 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help me locate a birth certificate for my Gt Gt Gt Grandfather George Robinson who was said to come from Cheshunt.  This is according to the 1941 census where he was shown as being a VISITOR in Haggerstone West in Shoreditch.

There are no papers for George Robinson at all not even a marriage certificate to Mary Freeman.

He had a son(my Gt Gt Grandfather) George William Robinson born in Haggerstone East, on 26/12/1852, mother was shown as Mary Freeman also from Haggerstone West.

civil registration only came in in 1837 so there would be no birth cert for him
you would have to look up the parish records to find him
with regard to the 1841 census of him where you said he was visiting in haggerston
how do you know he was born in cheshunt 1841 census only states whether he was born in or out of the county he was in

Hello Robinson    :)

Welcome to Rootschat   ;D

We'll do our best to help you  :)

I don't think you're going to find a birth certificate for your Gt  Gt  Gt Grandfather, because civil registration - and thus birth certificates  -  didn't begin until 1837  :-\

I'll have a look at the census for 1861 and see whether I can find him with his wife and son  :)

It sounds as if he would hav ebeen born before Civil Registration began in 1837, so there will be no birth certificate.
It will be a case of looking for a christening (if he was christeend) in Parish records, not easy with a common name.
You will need to know more about where and when he was born.

Have you found him in all the censuses? Where/when does he say he was born?
If not, then shout and we will help.

Hi  -  I'm there - but not getting far -

You say, Robinson, that on the 1841 (I presume) you found him as a visitor  -  I found him on the 1851 as a visitor, age 31, Coach Maker.

Can I just ask how you know this is him ?

ADDED :  Wozzle -  it's the 1851 where he's a visitor in Haggrstone   ;)  see above   :)

Well, I can't see a George Robinson b. 1852 Middlesex  (with or without initial W)
with parents George and Mary,  on the 1861 census.

Nor can I see a George Robinson b. 1831 Cheshunt   :-\

There is no marriage in the vicinity of Shoreditch for a George Robinson to a Mary Freeman before Dec 1852   :-\  This could mean of course that if they were married, it was somewhere else  -  but where   :-\

Liz - Wozzle -  where am I going wrong   :-\

I dont think you are going wrong at all, Mum44!

George Robinson is hardly a rare name, there must be millions around.

The only definite confirmed piece of info we have to go on is a birth cert Dec 1852 (registered 1st quarter 1853) for George William, son of George and Mary.

Now by 1861 anything could have happened. We know that little George W is still alive, if he is the persons Grtgrtgrandad. But we know nothing of George senior or Mary. One of both could have died. George W could be recorded under a stepfathers surname. Or, if Dad also George, IS still there, he could be known as William or even some pet name to distinguish the two George's in the household.
We do not know if he had siblings - if he was the eldest or if he was an afterthought and his parents had been married or together for 20+ years.
It is all very unknown.

BUT - something more must be known at least about George W (junior) for robinsona50 to be sure that this birth is the right one for him, in the first place.
And, if we are sure, then we need to glean as much as pos from what info iS known as from the cert, before we can find anything earlier.

Hence it would be useful to know Dads occupation and the address from the 1852 cert (maybe george and Mary are there in 1851?)

But more so it would be useful if robinsona50 could let us know what other info there is about George Wjunior that led him to this cert - has he found him on later censuses after his marriage, for example?

So - can I add my welcome to robinsona50, and say yes we are raring to go, but need a bit more info?

Hi All,

Ok where do I start ?
I have my Gt Gt Grandfathers(George William Robinson's) Birth certificate which shows that he was born in Shoreditch on 26/12/1852, he then at some stage left for India when he was old enough. The address for his parents on the birth certificate is 7 Margaret Street, Haggerstone East, Shoreditch. Parents names are George and Ann Robinson nee Freeman.

As for George Robinson his father, I have a census for 1841 which shows that he was a visitor and was said to be born in Cheshunt, he was living in Haggerstone West at the time of the census. his occupation is Coach Maker(I think)...

I hope the above helps.....
