You can send a scan at 300-600dpi but you will have to reduce the physical size so it comes in at just 500Kb. the max. allowed on here.Change the filename slightly as you can't use the same one twice & start it as a new topic.

Hi Steven...I have sent a PM to Old Rowley, our resident extreme expert in clothing styles and photographers and sundry photo dating tricks :D Hopefully he'll have a chance to look at your photo...

Cheers,
China
Oh, and yes a copy could be taken from an original. It would have to be rephotographed, so the result was usually a print that was diminished in quality.

All photos of that time were glued onto cardstock like yours...the photo print was made on extremely thin paper that couldn't exist on its own...

If you want it restoring make a separate post in the Photo restoration section, they have just done an excellent job for me, colour as well (See Ayres wedding 1896 in that section)

Am amazed.   Thanks again.

Thanks all, what a friendly and welcoming community this is.    I hope I can contribute back at some point.

The restoring is great.    On another thread I am in conversation about when and who these people are.    When I don’t know.   But this couple with child can only be one these two.

The first is
Mary Devote 1842-1918
William Barni  1846-1887
Married in Bristol, after his early death Mary went to live in Cardiff, then to London where she died at her daughter’s house.    Mary was not there in the 1911 census so we assume she was still living in Cardiff.
They had 12 Children, 10 survived.
1866-1867, 1868, 1870-1871, 1871, 1874, 1875, 1876 etc.  All born/died in Bristol.

The second are
Richard Devote 1852-1919
Angelina Barni 1853-1906
Married in Bristol moved to Pembroke by 1876, then moved back to Bristol.
They had 10 Children, 8 survived.
1873-1875,1876, 1879, born in Pembroke, then Bristol, 1882, etc.

Below is a photo that has definitely identified the woman as Mary Devote.  On the back of the photo reads “Richard and sister”.  On the front reads ‘Metropole Studios Cardiff’.  I don’t have the original so it’s a bit small sorry.

We have no photos of William Barni or Angelina Barni.    So I guess the woman looks nothing like the older Mary, but the man could be Richard!   Any guesses?

I agree with you, on the fact the people in the picture look like Richard and Angelina!

Hello Steven, I am a descendant of an Italian East End family (Charles and Mary Aspras/Asparassa) and I’m confident our families knew each other. I have done some tentative research in recent years, now I am really interested in learning about the people, the area as well as building a family tree and your posts prompted me to join Rootschat today. I see that your grandmother kept everything whereas all of our family papers were taken to Australia decades ago and are now in Canada, yet to be explored by my cousin. I wonder if there’s any hint of my family in your possessions........... if you are willing to chat about any aspect of the past I would love to hear from you.

Best regards, Helen
