ROBSON family
« on: Saturday 04 April 09 07:49 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

trying to trace the BMs & D of an Adam Robson b 12 Aug 1866 (Hawick) , I believe he was married three times and had a total of 12 children!   not having much luck with the Scot People site.   His son James (Jimmie) married Bella (her second husband - 1st was an Ernie Waitt) and they lived in Jedburgh.   Looking to find the dob of all children and the details of his wives!

Hello BW252

Unable to help, away on holiday in an hour or so.

However,  for others.

You have a son James - what is his dob? Have you got his birth entry from SP? what details are on the entry.

Do you have Adam on any census records?  I see from the IGI that he's the son of John Robson and Margaret Turnbull.

Any idea where  Adam Robson died - can't see him on SP - is there any family tale of emigration....

Good luck.  Regards,   Steve

I don't have much time at the moment but this might be a start.

1901 census.

6 North Street Springburn Glasgow

Adam Robson     34 Rail Eng Maker Iron Cutter Hydraulic, b Hawick
Janet Robson    2 daughter Glasgow
Margaret Robson  1  "           "
Elspeth Miller    34  servant, house keeper, Galashiels
Andrew Miller    15  Grocer Shopkeeper Apprentice, Kelso
Mary Miller    11  scholar, Galashiels
Nellie Miller    5  boarder

I'm getting ready to go out soon but if you get no other responses, I'll look at other census returns and SP when I get back this evening.

Later, you might want to consider putting your post on Scotland General board as it seems obvious he at least had some of his children in Glasgow, perhaps elsewhere.

If you do post elsewhere, please cross refer with this thread to avoid duplication of effort.  Quote:

Hi Dave

thanks for this.   I do know that Adams wife died in childbirth (james) but was a bit dubious of the 1901 census.   Adam married again apparently a woman 20 years younger! and they had 9 children - Adam, Madge, Annie, Maureen, Helen, Katie, Jock, Robert and Wull.   Have not been able to find any tie up with the birth of james and the death of his mother.

I'm just doing things quickly as I get ready.  Am waiting on a lift at the mo so will need to rush off.

I'm not analysing anything yet.

32 Victoria St, Galashiels

Adam Robson     24  Woollen piercer
Marjory Robson 25 Tillicoultry, Clackmannanshire

Lift arrived as I type.
Back later.

Hi,
Saw your post ....had a look to see what I could find.

Found a marriage for Adam marrying a Majory Hunter 1890 Galashiels.
She died at the age of 31 1898 DENNISTOUN
Thats if we have the correct Adam.

I do think the 1901 is your Adam.....but can't pinpoint births for the children..

I haven't found any other marriages for son James.
I am not sure when he  Married. Isabella Moore married her first husband in 1924 Ernest Reed Waitt.

If you Pm your email addy I will send you what I have found.

Hope this helps

Ali

PS
Just had one last look it seems he did marry someone 20 years younger in 1914

Hi Ali

The plot thickens.   If Adam (Auld Ned) married in 1914 it means that some of the  9 kids he had could have beenillegitimate!!!.   My e mail is (*)

Hi BW252,

The birth of Adam Robson is on SP dated 1866, born in Hawick, Roxburghshire, will cost £1.20 of the £6 credits that you need to purchase to download the certificate,

On Ancestry, he is on 1871 census with parents, John 39 and Margaret 35 at 21 Exchange St, Jedburgh, siblings Archibald 11, Margaret 9, Robert 7, and Janet 2, he was 4 at the time.

In the 1881 census at 3 Boundaries, Jedburgh he is a 14yo Millworker. No more children but mother's name shown as Martha and only 41yo, maybe Margaret died and this may be new wife.

In 1891 at 32 Victoria St, Galashiels he is 24yo Woollen Piercer with wife Marjory Hunter. He married in Gala 1890 and this can be downloaded for £1.20, also.

In the 1901 census, at 6 North St, Springburn, Glasgow, he is down as a 34 yo Rail Eng Maker, Iron Cutter Hydraulic. He has 2 children showing Janet 2 and Margaret 1, but no sign of wife. He seems to be sharing house with a 34 yo Elspeth Miller and her 3 children, Andrew 15, Mary 11 and Nellie 5. I can see no marriage for these 2.

Death of his wife, Margaret Hunter was in 1898 at Dennistoun at age of 31, which can also be downloaded. From post of alicook.  On the 1901 census he has listed 2 children Janet 2 and Margaret 1, will have to prove their births on 1901 census.

On the NAS,

There is an entry,

Affiliation and aliment - female - 10 September 1914 between a Miss Margaret Turnbull and Adam Robson

Now Margaret Turnbull was his mother's name, co-incidence?

Tom

Changed original post to include death of his wife.
Scotland - Buchanan, Thomson, Pat(t)erson, Stewart, Ritchie, Tracey
Ireland - Tracey, Conroy, Pat(t)erson.

its all starting to take shape now:

AR (Auld Ned) b 1866
Married Marjory Ure/Hunter (fa Andrew shown as reputed on Mge Cert)
Marjory died 1898 in Denistoun, Glasgow
1901 census shows Elspeth Millar with Janet & Margaret Robson (shown as mother on birth certs).   Son James Millar born 1902 EM is mother.
Elspeth died in 1903 - this ties in with family letter stating that she died just after James was born.   However on her death cert her fa is shown as James Robson and mo Elspeth Robson nee Millar.   Adam had an Uncle called James !   Still looking at this
Adam Robson (Young Ned) is then born in 1904 to an Isabella Mackintosh(?)
Auld Ned then marries a Mary Palmer in 1914.

I am still trying to find the births of the remaining children

The only thing that bothers me about these Adams is the professions shown on all the certs
