Info Please on McCahon Family
« on: Monday 06 April 09 23:02 BST (UK) »
I am searching for information on my  McCahon  family and I have traced them to George McCahon who I estimate was born about 1845.  George is shown on the 1887 marriage certificate of his son Robert J.McCahon.  George is described as a weaver and his residence was probably the same as his son's which was Culnaman( near Kilrea in Co.Derry).
I would be pleased to hear from anyone doing research on the McCahon name as well as more specific information on the family living around Culnaman..

Suspect that Robert McCahon only came to Culnaman around the time of his marriage or shortly before, possibly to work. There are no McCahons listed in Griffith's Valuation (1859) in the townland of Culnaman. There was a George McCahon bapt. 1851 (no age given) from Ballylame (south of Garvagh) in Main St. Presbyterian Church, son of a Robert McCahon.

Thank you for this information and suggestion.  If you are right it looks as though I need to widen my search.

Should add that there are no early McCahon baptisms in Moneydig Presbyterian Church.

If your George McCahon was born c1845 (possibly earlier based on son's marriage date?) there should be a marriage for him which should give father's name nd occupation as well as George's residence at time of marriage.

Wonder if this could be any connection?:

Thanks. what is IGI?
I had a look myself at the Griffith's Valuation but is it only for those who had land (or rented land?)?.  I don't suppose a weaver had land.
As regards George's birth date I suggested 1845 on the basis of  reckoning approx 21 yrs to the birth of his son and then 21 years to the son's marriage in 1887.  Probably it was more as they often married later than 21.  So I suppose a baptism of 1851 for George doesn't seem likely.  The birth of a daughter to George in 1867 seems a better fit and likely to be the right George McCahon.  Can you give me more info on where the details are to be found?.  I don't recognise the initials IGI.
Finally do you know anything about weavers in rural N. Ireland in late 19th century? Might that be a possible route to information?
I am grateful for your comments

IGI = International Genealogical Index (part of LDS site www.familysearch.org)

Weaving at home was a local 'industry' in mid 1800s. Tenants (as most people, even farmers, were) would be listed in Griffith's Valuation (check for holdings such as 'house' or 'house and small garden', etc.). The linen industry in this area suffered a severe slump due to several economic factors and many people went to Scotland, Canada, U.S., etc. looking for work and better opportunities.
