Uniform ID
« on: Thursday 09 April 09 17:07 BST (UK) »
Hi all

I received this picture of who is believed to be my great Uncle John Bews Hamilton born Greenock 1874, died Massachusetts 1919.
John emigrated to the USA about 1912 and became a naturalised American citizen in 1915.

The uniform cap badge seems to have a Crown on it so unlikely to be an American uniform?

Is it possibly Canadian Army, would an American citizen enlist in the Canadian Army.

Bit of a poser for me, maybe someone can identify uniform

thanks

Definately British or Canadian...any chance of high resolution scan of cap badge. You check Canadian attestation online however theres a number of John Hamiltons to check.British Medal Index cards are also online...He didnt return to UK to join up did he?

Hi Ady

I tried a much better resolution but it would not upload, too big a file. Any suggestions?

As far as I am aware he only returned to Scotland for a brief visit.

I have contacted his grandaughter in USA to ask if she knows anything and his great neice in NZ, who sent me photo to see if she knows anything, awaiting replies

Should have added, he is seated front right (with the tash) above the sergeant stripes there appears to be a Fusilier type badge?

Hello Tommy,

Don't try to send the whole picture. Crop it down to just a section with, say, head and shoulders.

Phil

PS Make that top half, so that you get the stripes in.

If your scanner cannot do pre-scans, ie were you can select a small area at a high res after doing a pre-scan, you should edit the large file you have using something like Paint. Using the dotted square box - top right in the tool box, draw a square around the badge, Press <Ctrl> C (ie copy).

Then start a new blank page, then <Ctrl> V (ie paste); and you will have just a small area saved as a new file.

If you do that a few times - one per different badge - you can then post them.

Ken

Problem being Ady that they are NOT wearing Canadian jackets!!

These are British ones circa 1918  :o ;D
