I am looking for the parents and family of Thomas Humphreys.

His daughter Susannah Humphreys married John Cave (Mariner) in 1847 at Christchurch in the Parish of St George in the East, Middlesex. The witnesses were Thomas Humphreys and Sarah Humphreys.

On the 1841 census living in Thames street, Greenwich in the parish of St Alphege I have found two Humphrey families in Thames Street and another in Horseferry Road.

There is a Thomas Humphreys, 50, and born in the county, Maria, wife 50, born in county, Maria, 25, born in county and Mary Ann, 15, also born in the county. They are living in Thames Street, Greenwich.

On the same page Elizabeth Humphreys, 55, born in county and Henrietta, 20, and born in the county. They appear to be living in the same house as Francis Haines, 50, born in the county and Beer Shop (keeper?)

On the left hand page in Horseferry Road are Thomas Humphreys, 25, waterman, born in county Sophia, 20, born in county Thomas, 3, born in county and Sophia, 9 months. born in county. There is no sign of Susannah with any family but she could have been working in service?  On the '51 Thomas and Maria are alone.

On the marriage certificate Thomas the bride's father is termed a waterman and I am hoping he is the Thomas married to Maria. And maybe the Thomas married to Sophia is their son and Susannah's brother. And another maybe! Perhaps Elizabeth is the sister in law of Thomas senior.

If anyone can help with this family I would be most grateful,

Regards,
Abiam

Hi Abiam

I notice from one of your other posts that Susannah HUMPHREYS (I assume this is the same person) consistently gives her birthplace as Aldgate, Middlesex (ie. London north of the river Thames - not Kent) http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,361486.0.html

There is a Susannah HUMPHREYS baptised Aldgate 1823 with parents Thomas & Elizabeth Mary http://www.familysearch.org but whether that is the correct baptism in questionable.  However, there is:

1851 - 1 Phoenix Court, St George in the East, Middlesex

Thomas HUMPHREYS head mar 64 lighterman b.Aldgate Middlesex
Elizabeth Mary wife 60 b.St Luke Middlesex
Samuel son 36 musician b.Aldgate
Harriett dau 26 parasol maker b.Aldgate
Sarah dau 21 parasol maker b.St George Middlesex

HO107/1547 folio 533 page 44
..........................

They are at Phoenix Court in 1841 too with a Susan HO107/696 book 7 folio 32 page 22 - just shout if you need the full details and somebody will look them up for you.

As I say, I can't be certain that this is the family you are looking for but I would have thought it much more likely than a family in Greenwich.

I'll move this post over to London for you.

Hi Abiam

Watermen and lightermen records are held at the Guildhall Library in London.

Thank you Reyz and Valda for your help.

I think the 4676 is 'my' Thomas Humphreys likely because I read that they often married soon after the apprenticeship finished, his finished in 1808.  Thomas married in Dec 1810 to Elizabeth Mary Ferguson and their first son was christened Samuel.  If this is right the name Samuel was chosen after his Grandfather whom he had been apprenticed to.

I think 4677 is too late
4678 is not my Thomas (he was a red herring)
And 4685 is too early.

All of this is supposition I know but without being able to view the records myself for the moment this is the best that can be done.

I shall hunt through the IGI for the Samuel that Thomas may have been apprenticed to,

Thanks to everyone who has helped me along the way,
Abiam :) :) :)
