Date for my great grandma?
« on: Tuesday 14 April 09 21:26 BST (UK) »
Hi
Many years ago my grandma very kindly wrote on the back of this picture "Louisa Michel".  Louisa (1870-1909) was her mother but she never knew whether her mother was the baby or the lady!!
I hope you might be able to date the picture and solve the mystery :)
Thank you so much for your thoughts.
PS:  She was married 1893 ... my grandma gave me the original marriage certificate which inspired my family history search.

Hello Heather & welcome to Rootschat.
The lady has a dress & hairstyle of early - mid 1880's.If this is Louisa b.1870 & she married young it could at a push be late 1880's if she was behind the fashion.
Children are quite difficult to date but the girl's dress & hair style first appeared 1880's but did enjoy a revival late 1890's.As there is a striking resemblance I would suggest mother and the daughter in the 2nd.Whether this is who you think it is I'm not quite so sure.If you have the originals can we see all of the card plus reverse.Lovely photos.
I suggest you change the heading as my Great Grandma doesn't say what you want to know, that's why you haven't had any replies.Date for great grandma or similar.

Francis Champneys Burnham traded from Atlantic Rd. 1886-89 & Peckham Rye 1887-91.
Taking into account old card stock a closer date of 1887-90.Is the reverse of the 2nd. photo the same?

Thanks Jim.  The back of the other picture isn't so ornate ... it just says "photographed by H>W> Bird & Co. 16&17 Poultry, London, EC

Henry William Bird traded from this address 1877-84.Ceased to be a limited company in 1885 so no later than that date.I would suggest a date of early 1880's.So this could be the same person if the girl is around 12-14,also it would give a birth date of around 1870.If Louisa married 1893 this would put the 1st. photo mid 1890's which it isn't I'm afraid.

Hi Jim,
I see what you mean by the resemblance of the girl and mother.  If you think they are the same people and the dates match up it's looking like my grandma made a mistake with the name!  I'll have a look at other photographs of the family and see if I can work out who they are ... just when I thought it would be easy to solve!
Thanks
Heather
