Harpooner transport ship shipwreck 1816
« on: Saturday 18 April 09 17:44 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know of a resource to find a survivors list or a passenger list from the 'Harpooner' transport ship which was shipwrecked in November 1816 off Newfoundland en route from Quebec to Deptford?

According to the google books excerpt from 'Exploring theAvalon "approximately half of the Harpooner's company of 411 veterans of the recently concluded war with the United States and their wives and children drowned or died of exposure in the cold water of St Shotts".

Many thanks, Josey

Hi Josey
The link for the passenger list of Harpooner is defunct.  Do you have a current source for the list?
Thanks!

I have found in the British Army records held at Kew, England that Captain Mathew Henry Witlock/Willock's record the following statements are shown:

* 10 November 1816 on the wreck of the Harpooner transport on the coast of Newfoundland received His Royal Highness the Duke of York approbation for his conduct on that occasion also Lord Howard of Effinghams communiicaiton on that subject dated 1 January 1817

* One years Pay as Captain and 100 per Annum Pension for life in consequence of the Inquiry into the Wreck of the Harpooner Transport.

* In 1817 received a medal from His Royal Highness the Duke of Sussex and the Royal Humane Society for saving the lives of Part of the Troops under my command (Lord Howard of Effingham) on board the Harpooner transport
