A self actor winder of cotton??? Any more ideas?

Richard was a Selfactor Minder. A Selfactor was a kind of Mule Spinning machine.

Thank you. It all looks noisy, and dangerous as I'm sure a Minder also meant fix everything that stopped, broke or jammed!

Yep! I saw a program of the history of Industrial Accidents.

Apparently, it was quite common for loom operators to loose One or more fingers.

Maybe that's where the saying "get yer finger out" came from
