Im terrible for not keeping track of where I pick up notes - it may have come from the JGLS or one of the old books like "Gypsies of Britain" or "Gypsies Parson" but I have a note saying Mary Linyans mother was a Matilda Boswell. That may or may not be useful and remember its only reputed- not fact until you find a reliable ref for it. :)

There is this Major Boswell b 1844 -died 1885 Chorlton Lancashire aged 41

OConnor Boswell 12 Jul 1867

Expenena Boswell 1 Oct 1878

This could be an earler Major there is the later Major in  Perthshire Advertiser 26th May 1870, or they could be the same person

Saturday 11 March 1837
 Leicester Chronicle
  Leicestershire

MARY LINION, and EDINGAL, ALFRED, and MAJOR BOSWELL, gipsies, were indicted for fraudulently obtaining half-a-dozen silver tea-spoons, the property of Mr. Thomas Shepherd, of Barrow-upon- Soar, on the Ist of April, 1835 ; but the case was not brought into Court.

There was certainly more than one Major Boswell.
The early one b1780 Bloxham Ox to John & Sarah married Lucy Boswell and Mary Linyon who’s mother was reputedly a Boswell.
The later one was son of Delere (1881 census Cheshire), or Delilah (1871 Cheshire). I believe this is Deleta widow of Clark Boswell.

Thank you both for replies, I am not sure its Deleta wife of Clark who is mother of this Major, as she died in 1844 Risbridge Suffolk according to records if correct,so would not be living in 1871. I think Deliah is in 1880  USA Oakland, Alameda, California, as sister of Josiah Boswell b 1823 England and he appears to be the son of Edward Boswell and Phillis Lee. ( known as Devonshire Boswells)
Delia Boswell was baptised 5 Feb 1808 :Paignton,Devon,England > Edward and Phillie.

It seems she then returned to UK to be found in 1881 Derbyshire Tinknall living alone.I have not located a death though.

Mary Linyon and Major Boswell's elopement is mentioned in the chapter "Henry Boswell 'King of the Gypsies'" in part 1 of Richard Edmund's "The Early Romany Boswells a Family History 1650-1810"

There are 15 references for the given name Major and 5 for the surname Linyan or Linian in part 2.
