Llanidloes birth 1885

My husband's grandmother was born in Llanidloes 7/1/1885. She came to Australia and had 2 children in 1913 and 1917.  On the first child's birth certificate there is an empty space for the father.  In space for the mother she has Margaret Jane Rowlands born Llanidloes.  The second child was born as Jones then changed to Rowlands.(This child dies at 9 months)  On her certificate their is no father either. I spoke to somebody in BDM's Brisbane about this and they said the only way she could change from Jones to Rowlands was to show them a marriage certificate, which I can't find.
When her first child gets married it says that her name was formerly Jones and her husband's name was Harry Rowlands.  The family know very little about her and I don't know whether she is a Jones or a Rowlands.
This one is a real mystery.  I know there are a lot of Jones and Rowlands in Wales so maybe this one may still remain a mystery.  She covered her tracks quite well.

If she was born Llanidloes, it would be a Newtown birth registration . There is a Margaret Jane Jones listed on the North Wales BMD (which gives sub-districts) for Llanidloes Upper in 1887.  No Margaret Jane Rowlands for that area.

It might be her - what is the source of the info on  her birth date?

North Wales BMD shows a marriage for a Margaret Jane Jones in Llanfyllin RD in 1904. One of the possible spouses was a John Rowlands.

The source of the birth date was her grave .
Says she was born7/1/1882, but I feel it could be 1885.
On the birth certificate of her first child .  the child is born in 1913 and she says she is 28.  On the certificate of the second child born 1917 she is 32.

I like the marriage in 1904, will look into that, thanks heaps gadget

I've been looking at Passenger Lists - the only Margaret Rowlands gowing to Australia was 29 March 1911 and she was down as Single and a domestic servant, aged 28.

There are too many Jones to check through 

Could you get  a death cert which would give parents' names?

There are these 2 births:
March 1885
Jones Margaret Jane Newtown 11b 181
Jones Margaret Jane Newtown 11b 167

... and that is only the one quarter in 1885 

These births tie in with the January 7th birth date.

I'm thinking that even if the year was wrong, there'd be little reason for Margaret to give an incorrect birth day and month. You would expect her to have celebrated her birthday on the same date each year, so when it came to the gravestone, the correct date would be known, but perhaps the year was a bit out. 

At the birth of both children she gives her age which we can estimate at 1885. We don't know who gave her age at death and maybe they got it wrong. With lack of anything better to go on, we can only believe what she said her age was.

Gadget, Margaret's d/c doesn't give the names of her parents. "Unknown". Looks like some kind of family rift.

Jones Margaret and on the same page Rowlands Rowland .... But I don't know if they married eachother. 

The thing is, we don't even know if she married Harry Rowlands and if she did was it in Wales, England, Australia ..... ?

I'll check those two births out on the North Wales site - it should give Llanidloes on there if either of them are correct.
