Family Details
William Henry Gaunt
Born 27/7/1830 in Leek Staffordshire England, son of John a banker and his
wife Mary (nee Bakewell). Wm arrived in Vic and received is first
Government appointment as Chief Clerk in Beechworth, March 1854.
Sub-Warden for the Beechworth mining district in Jan 1856
August 1856 Chinese Protector and given control of the Woolshed district
(the richest mining area in the northeast)
Police Magistrate in 1857 and was sent to Buckland to restore order after
Chinese riots in July that year.
Jan 58 Warden appointment and transferred to Chiltern (not far from
Beechworth)
Later Commissioner of Crown Lands and Coroner.
April 1865 back to Beechworth then later moved to Sandhurst and Ballarat.
Studied law, called to the Bar in 1873. Barrister in Ballarat, County Court
Judge in 1891.
Married Elizabeth Mary Palmer 1860 daughter of Frederick P.
William died 5/10/1905 in the suburb of Malvern, Melbourne, leaving wife 5 sons and 2 daughters.

Married Hubert Lindsay Miller in Chiltern in 1894
Author of several novels depicting life in the 'outback' of Australia. Hubert died in 1900. Mary left for England in 1901. She also travelled to China and West Africa. Lived in England for a time during WW1, then she moved to the Italian Riviera. She lived on the Ligurian coast of Italy for twenty years.
When WW2 broke she was forced to flee to France, leaving all her writings, unpublished manuscripts, and belongings She died in Cannes in 1942.

Ernest Frederick GAUNT
Born Beechworth 1865
Joined the Royal Navy in 1878 at the age of 13, at the time of the 1881 census he was a seaman on HMS Wolverine 'at sea', by the time of the 1891 census he was a Lieutenant on HMS Belleisle based in Stoke Damerel [Plymouth] Devon.
In 1896 he was Ist Lieutenant on armoured cruiser HMS Narcissus.

1900 Commisioner and Superintending transport officer Weihawei, China
1900 / 01 Boxer Rebellion, China
1903 Commanding landing party, HMS Mohawk, Durbo, Swaziland.
