Edward GREEN
« on: Tuesday 21 April 09 23:21 BST (UK) »
Hello there,

I am looking for my GG Grandfather Edward GREEN.

According to his NZ death certificate, he was born around 1830 in Ely.

He married Mary Jane GURR (nee HAVELOCK), 29 Dec 1856, at Sunderland, Durham. His age is 22 , his occupation is farm labourer and his fatherís name is John GREEN, also a farm labourer.
Shortly afterwards, the couple emigrated to Victoria, Australia and in 1863 they came on to New Zealand. He died in 1917 aged 87.

I canít find Edward on the 1841 or 1851 census. There is a submitted entry on the IGI for a birth for Edward GREEN, 17 Dec 1832, Chatteris, Cambridge, and in the same batch his marriage - but the date is wrong. So I am a bit wary of this information and would like to verify his birth if possible.

I would appreciate any help locating Edward!

Kind regards,
Stephanie† :)

Have you checked the baptism index on the cfhs site? They have an Edward Green baptised 1831 in Soham which is near Ely but his father was Robert.

It is quite possible that he wasn't baptised -there are a lot of non-conformists in that area and many of them don't baptise infants.

Hi Anneb,

Thanks for your reply and for pointing me to the CFHS site. I hadn't checked it and it looks very useful.
Alas - my Edward is proving very elusive.

There's no baptism in Chatteris parish register for an Edward Green 1830-60. But presumably the member who submitted the entry got the birthdate and place from somewhere, unless it's pure fiction (which with my experience of member submissions I wouldn't rule out!).

Hi David,

Thanks for that. Yes - I've come across some dodgy submitted entries too.
Of course, the information on his death certificate could be wrong too and I could be totally barking up the wrong tree!
Wish I could find him on a census!
