Anyone know of Jessie Pilmer - 1870 Dundee?
« on: Friday 08 May 09 09:41 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I am looking for help in tracing details of a Jessie Pilmer who had an illegitimate daughter Isabella Gilchrist in August 1870 - father named as Peter Gilchrist.

The address was Doig's Entry, 164 Overgate, Dundee.

Peter Gilchrist is my g.g. grandfather.

In January 1873 Peter's address at the time he married Elizabeth Watson was 68 Seagate, Dundee.

Any help would be appreciated - I have tried all variations of the name in Scotlandspeople and no luck.

Anyone know what Jessie might be short for (other than Jessica).

Thanks

Pauline

In the 1861 census transcript, there is this possibility:

Jessie Strathern 35, linen weaver, b. Kettins, Perthshire
Jessie Pilmer 14, b. Alyth, Perthshire
George Haxton 10, b. Alyth, Perthshire
Peter Haxton 4 Months, b. Alyth, Perthshire

Address: Chapel St, Alyth, Perthshire

Can't see her though in 1871.

Thanks, Monica, I'll follow up on Jessie Palmer, in Dundee, born in Alyth.

I had already found her as boarder at 7mths in 47 Cotton Road, Dundee.

Also, thanks, Ev, this is indeed the Isabella Gilchrist with Peter Gilchrist & Elizabeth Watson family now in Tillicoultry from 1881 onwards.

We are trying to find why Jessie gave up baby Isabella and what became of Jessie herself afterwards.

Also trying to find if Isabella married and when she died.

Your replies are brilliant and very helpful.

Kind regards
Pauline

Hi PWN,

Jessie is a nickname for Janet which can be used when there are to or more Janet Pilmer  living in the same area.

I have a record of;
1. Jessie Pilmer marrying John Carter on 29 Oct 1852 in Swinton & Simprim Parish, Berwickshire

2.Jessie Pilmer born 22 October at Duns, Berwickshire.Daughter of Thomas Fisher pilmer and Isabella Gillan. Jessie married Walter Harvey, no date or place.

3. Janet Elizabeth, age 15,  appears in the 1881 census for Duns, Berwickshire, father John Pilmer. She is the daughter of John Fisher Pilmer and Janet Bell Renton and was born 5 April 1865 and one record shows Janet elizabeth (Jessie) Pilmer.

4.There is a Jessie Pilmer in the USA to other Pilmers from Berwickshire but the dates make it impossible to be the Jessie you want

I have checked My treewhich is Scots from Midlothian, the Tree of the Berwickshire Pilmers, The largest English Pilmer tree and the Anzac Pilmer tree. The Anzac tree originates from the Angus/Perthshire and Dundee locations and I will check it again using the input from my New Zealand contact.

Coincidently I have a 20 year old neighbour called Jessica living in the house to the right of mine and a 5 year old Jessica (Jessie) living in the house to the left of mine

Colin

Hi Colin
Many thanks for taking the time to look into Jessie Pilmer for me. We are now aware that Jessie is a nickname for Janet.
Looking at the points you raised 1-4 ..I don't think these are our Jessie but the Anzac tree from Angus/Perthshire you mention may through up something.

In 1851 - we have a Jess Pilmer (aged 4) born in Alyth Angus/Perthshire daughter of Jannet Stratheme whom we think is a Janet Strathern.

In 1861 - we have the same Jessie Pilmer (Aged 14) born Alyth  and daughter of Jessie Strathern.

In 1871 - we have Jessie's baby Isabella Gilchrist (aged 7mo) boarding with a Wilkie family and we have a Jessie PALMER (which I believe is often mixed with PILMER) lodging with a Mrs Young in Dundee.

We have the original birth certificate for Isabella (born 21-Aug-1870) which gave us mother Jessie Pilmer and father Peter Gilchrist. We cannot find Peter Gilchrist's whereabouts in 1871 but he does already have a family (partner Elizabeth Watson whom he married in 1873) and children living in Tillicoultry.

By 1881 census Elizabeth states that Isabella is her daughter. We would dearly like to know who Jessie Pilmer was and what became of her.

All help much appreciated.

Kind regards
Pauline
