Ryton - children of John Robson of Barlow
« on: Friday 08 May 09 18:28 BST (UK) »
Hello there!

I am trying to track down the children of John Robson of Barlow in the Parish of Ryton.

By going through the pages which are available on the BT site I have found :
Thomas 1777
Elizabeth 1782
William 1791
Joseph 1794
Unfortunately a lot of the years are missing and I am trying to find the earliest child in the hope of having a chance of finding his marriage

If Thomas is the earliest then there was a marriage 31 Mar 1777 of a JR to Elizabeth Easton, and on the IGI there is a bap for an Easton Robson in Jun 1797 which, if he is born in Barlow would solve my problem, but that is one of the missing periods.

Any help would be much appreciated.

All the best

Ashley

If you search Durham Records Online, you can specify child's surname Robson, and father's name John Robson, in the Gateshead District (which included Ryton)
This will yield several Robsons whose residence was Barlow.

John Robson baptised 16 Apr 1780 son of Jno of Barlow
Jonathn. Robson baptised 16 Oct 1785 son of Jno.  of Barlow
James Robson baptised 10 Aug 1788 son of Jno.  of Barlow.

I dont know of Jno is John or Jonathan  but they are also of Barlow.

Just to muddy the waters

Hi Janis

I think Jno is usually John.

Many thanks for all the help - I'm up to 8 children now!

This is an old message board but wondering if anyone can shed light on Thomas Robson, listed on my ancestor George Robsons apprentice indenture as his father and living at Barlow about 1810 when the indenture was made.Cant find a marriage for a Thomas and the Thomas b 1777 a bit young to be having my George c 1795??George whent to Whittonstall and had a large family. We are frustrated as at a stop going further back due to no baptism at Ryton, where the census says he was born in 1795.His first son was a Thomas and his second Johnathan Wilburn Robson. All very confusing!!

Welcome to Rootschat

What sort of Apprenticeship did George have?

Maybe:
GEORGE Robson Baptised 12 Aug 1798 St Mary the Virgin, Whickham, Durham
Parents THOMAS/MARGARET Robson nee Thackeray
Abode Swalwell
Fathers Occp Smith
3rd son of Thomas ROBSON, native of Gateshead, and his wife Margaret daug of John THACKERAY, native of Ryton Parish

Just keep that in mind for now.

Now am I right that you have George married twice?
Thomas/ Jonathan Wilburn/Barbara have Mother as ELIZABETH, Father George
Children from 1826 onwards Mother is BARBARA nee LOWREY Married 11 May 1825 Whittanstall
Trouble is that Marriage Record has him as a Bachelor.

All on FreeREG

Trish :)

Hello Trish,
Many thanks for your reply.I have been unable to log back in for a bit but sorted now.
I looked at the George with mother Thackeray, and think i have found that one on census entries with age and birth place that tie in.
My George was an apprentice Cartwright to Joseph Oxley at Hedley near Whittonstall from December 1811 to 1815.
I really now think the likely answer is that my Thomas was either non conformist and registers are either not on line or have not survived,or just didn't have his children baptised.I also believe that the John having his family baptised and living at Barlow could well be a brother to my Thomas.
I did find a Thomas Robson buried at Ryton in 1830,abode Barlow and birth in 1744,and i think he is mine.I also found a Thomas Robson widower marrying a Mary Armstrong at Ryton in 1792 or 3.
Large parishes where people had to go a distance for baptisms i think put some people off or they didn't get around to it unlike smaller parishes where it was much easier. That and the name Robson makes things harder!
Many thanks again for your help
Kind Regards Michael
