help/advise needed William Cowie born 3/8/1907 in thirsk Yorkshire
« on: Monday 11 May 09 11:18 BST (UK) »
i have my wifes grandfather birth certificate
William Cowie born 3/8/1907 in thirsk Yorkshire
parents James Watson Cowie/Sarah Jane Cowie nee Ward.
i have their wedding cert married  in Whitby 28/10/1902.
i can trace the mothers side but the father(James Watson Cowie) is proving difficult.
i can find a James Watson cowie on the 1881 census rg11-5206/80 pg30.after this there is no trace on 1891/1901/1911 census.the wedding cert quotes James Watson cowies father as James occupation possibly as a grocer.
Any help/ideas would be much appreciated

The idea that first springs to mind is that his surname may have been mistranscribed.... and I've been wondering what may have been written as Cowey? Cowee?   or the C has been turned into something else.
None of this is much help- sorry but it is odd to have him in 1881 then gone- and if he was grocer you'd think he'd be tied to his shop... but maybe he was not a master grocer but the employee of a grocer so may have moved.

Thinking aloud there.
How old was James Watson Cowie in 1881?

2 Birth Index entries - 1881, Kendal, spelled Cowie.

and 1883 Sunderland: Durham Tyne & Wear - spelled Cowey - and a death entry for this chap ...

so the 1881 census is the first BMD shown above ..

wheres he gone then  :)

All the information is there on the 81 census.

Father of James Watson (aged 4 months) is James, 33, widower, coachman b Ipswich

Seacrhing for him on the 71 census, he is married to Catherins S and living with father inlaw Luce so I suspect that a search for the marriage will show that Catherine is nee Luce.
