86 Charlton Ave, Pawtucket, Providence, Rhode Island
« on: Thursday 14 May 09 22:58 BST (UK) »
Hi

I wonder if anybody would be kind enough to do a look up for me in the 1920 census for the Hawkins family at 86 Charlton Ave, Pawtucket, Providence, Rhode Island.

I am following this lead from a Memorial Inscription that I have from Audenshaw Cemetery in the United Kingdom.

In Loving Memory of
OLIVE
THE BELOVED DAUGHTER OF
WILLIAM & MARY WARD,
WHO DIED NOV 16TH 1912,
AGED 20 YEARS
ALSO THE ABOVE
WILLIAM WARD,
WHO DIED JULY 21ST 1918,
AGED 65 YEARS,
ALSO MARY JANE,
HIS BELOVED WIFE,
WHO DIED JAN 29TH 1926,
AGED 66 YEARS,
AND WAS INTERRED AT RURAL
CEMETERY NEW BEDFORD, U.S.A.

THY WILL BE DONE.

I managed to trace Mary Jane Ward coming through Ellis Island to the USA with her son Herbert Ward on 24 July 1920. They where heading to Marys daughter a, Mrs M. Hawkins, 86 Charlton Ave, Pawtucket, R.I

Now the only daughter I know that Mary had that started with a M was Mary Emma Ward, so I am guessing she married a Hawkins.

I have searched through the Passangers list for her coming to the USA but as of yet no luck. All I know is that in the 1911 UK census she is still living in the UK and still has her maiden name of Ward.

Also if anybody knows if there are any memorial inscriptions available for RURAL
CEMETERY NEW BEDFORD I would be most interested.

+ would love to know more on where Herbert ended up.

I never thought that one grave stone in a cemetery in the United Kingdom would open up so many questions to me.

Thanks in advance for any information or advice anyone can give me.

Haydn Ward

I cannot see anyone named Mary living in Pawtucket in 1920, born +/- 20 years of 1890, born in England.

I'm not certain they actually sailed.  Their names are lined out on the image.

Have you tried the UK Incoming Passenger list to see if they returned, after the death of their mother?  There are several Herberts and Agnes'.

Hi all

Thanks for all your replies. I noticed that Mary and Herberts names are lined out on the passenger lists in 1920, but did not know what that meant.

So does that mean they did not sail at all then, or did they get to the USA and where refused entry?

I need to do a search for the 1921 entry and check that out. Agnes now that is a name I have not come across before. I wonder if she is Herberts wife.

It is strange that there is no reference to Mary Emma Hawkins or Ward in the 1920 Census I can not find her on any passengers lists either. She has to be there somewhere.

Thanks again for all your help

Haydn

If there was a line through them, it generally means they didn't sail.  Sometimes, they show up elsewhere on the manifest.  See http://www.jewishgen.org/infofiles/Manifests/left/

I don't believe this has been mentioned.  Could this be the couple?:
1930 New Bedford, Bristol, Massachusetts Census
Herbert Ward, age 35, born about 1895, England, first married at age 26, immigrated 1921, Carpenter Help?, Cotton Mill
Agnes, wife, age 41, born about 1889, England, father born England, mother born Northern Ireland, first married at age 32, immigrated 1921, Winder?, Cotton Mill
Edith, daughter, age 5, born about 1925, Massachusetts
