Thomas Craig & Elizabeth Chrystal
« on: Tuesday 19 May 09 23:42 BST (UK) »
Thomas was born 1814 in Coldingham and died in Glasgow in 1865; parents George Craig & Sophia Porter.

Elizabeth b. 1817 in Coldingham, d. 1872 in Glasgow; parents John Chrystal & Helen Douglass.

Thomas & Elizabeth were married 1848 in Coldingham.

Any information which would help trace ancestors would be most appreciated.

Hi Sheila-Ann,

First reaction was to check IGI and ScotlandsPeople.

George and Sophia seem to have married, or had Banns read, on 25 Oct 1804 in Coldingham (this is from IGI).

The full document can be viewed on SP - I'm unsure what detail you'll get from that as I haven't looked at marriage records in that area but it might give a parents name, or the parish one or both of them was from.

IGI also gives 3 of their children in Coldingham....

ELIZABETH Christening: 03 AUG 1816
SARAH Christening: 19 JUL 1812
MARGARET Christening: 30 NOV 1806

Any one of their BDM's may give more info.

IGI shows John Chrystle and Helen Douglass married 13 Dec 1816.

SP has 2 entries for that....

12 Dec 1816 John Chrystle and Helen Douglas in Chirnside
13 Dec 1816 John Chrystle and Helen Douglass in Coldingham

It might be worth downloading these records from SP to ascertain whether they give more info.

You could also try looking for MI info.

Hope this helps.

Dave

There is a 3 page will on Scotlands people for your Thomas - cost £5 to download.  Most will be legal jargon, but worth downloading anyway.  I didn't check for any Chrystals.

Regards,  Steve  :O)

Craig Thomas 01/11/1865 warehouseman, residing in Craignestock Place, Glasgow, spouse of Elizabeth Chrystal Inventory Glasgow Sheriff Court Inventories SC36

From the IGI there is only one Sophia Porter born in Scotland from 1770 to 1790

ch 22 Nov 1787 in Coldingham, Berwick, Scotland - child of Thomas Porter and Margaret Martin - the OPR will be available on SP.

Sophia had at least one sister :
Elizabeth Porter  ch: 16 May 1784 Coldingham, Berwick, Scotland - also an 'extracted' record.

This would appear to tie in with the record found by by daval57, in that a naming pattern is used - Margaret, first daughter, named after mothers mother.  I'd now be looking for a John Chrystal born 1760 and 1795 with a mother whose name was Sarah.
I've checked the IGI - 1760 to 1800 - 39 John Chrystals born.  None with mother Sarah - a handful with no mothers name.

Will is a nice find Steve.
I keep forgetting to check there on SP, mainly because I've only ever had one result for my own kin.
Must have another look.

Hi Sheila-Ann,

Looks like there are two MIs which might fit your family, both at Coldingham Priory. They are for Sophia Porter & George Craig and Helen Douglas & John Chrystal. Didn't have time to get the full details, maybe next time. Unfortunately, there was not a plan of the MIs so could be hard to find unless anyone out there knows where this information can be found.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for all the help.  Will have a look at SP and get full info from there.

Looks like Elizabeth may have had a brother John if this is the MI: lots of people in this grave.  Wonder if it is a double plot or maybe just a tablet?  But this seems to be a different John to the one in the 1851 census.  But will check out his parentage on death cert.

The will sounds interesting and will chase that up too.

Thanks again for all the info.  It will keep me busy for a while.
