My great grandfather was Oliver Thomas Goldsmith, of James Herbert Jr's first marriage.

My grandfather has told me a bit about him, and that he came from a large family.

My grandfather has mentioned Uncle Stanley as well (he is listed on the ANZAC website).  Apparently he was a fantastic shot, could shoot things first go that others could barely see.  I don't think he ever married (?)

Another story that has been passed down to my grandfather and then to me, was that James Herbert, back in the old country, was wealthy.  He lost his wealth  during a financial crisis (which I suspect was the Panic of 1847 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panic_of_1847)...which would explain why he migrated to Australia 6 years later.

Or possibly the Panic of 1825 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panic_of_1825) because I was told that the banks failed, and this would mean it could be the more senior James Herbert

Dear autumn child
I had not heard of these stories shown today on Rootschat
Sadly all of those who would know have all passed away
If you have any further info, I would love to hear-also any other info on your ancestors

I have a few more stories but I'll check details with my grandfather, and hopefully get some new ones as well!

I did get the opportunity to meet my great grandfather Oliver Thomas a few times, and if he is anything to go by, his siblings would have been interesting people with a really good sense of humour :)

I'll let you know any more I find out.
