Sarah E Whyberd - 1821/1831 Census, Poplar
« on: Wednesday 20 May 09 20:04 BST (UK) »

Hiya

I'm trying to find any details on a Sarah E Whyberd, born in Poplar around 1815.  The surname could vary a little.....I have seen Whybred and Whybread as alternative surnames on other people's family trees.  However, Whyberd is on her marriage record.

All I know is that she married a policeman called George Grim in 1838 and they stayed living in Poplar.

If anyone has access to the 1821 or 1831 census, please could you see if she is in the area.  I would love to find out who her parents were.

Thank you

Jade

I dont think there is an 1821 or 31 census - at least not with names on it, there were some early ones with just numbers of people.
First meaningful census is 1841.

If you send for her marriage cert hopefully it will give name and occupation of her father

Thank you very much Liz.  I didn't realise that the 1831 census didn't have names on it so looks like I will be at a dead end without that marriage certificate.

Thanks for the reference and for the census lookups.  I will get that certificate ordered and hopefully it will get things kick started!

The early censuses only have names of head of household.

I found
1821 census Poplar
Thos Wybert 11 Regent Street West 8males 7 females
1831 Poplar
Whybard Thos Regent Street Barge builder 5m 4f

1821 Hackney
Whybrow William Morning Lane, Church Street 2m2f

nothing in 1811 Hackney

This is all the information given in those censuses.

Not very helpful but may be later.  I looked at all names beginning with W to find anything similar

Good luck

Thank you Silviaann.  It is quite possible that your census info relates to the same family because Sarah Whyberd married George Grim, who resided in number 7 Regent Street.  Perhaps this is how they met!

I'm still at a loss with the correct spelling of the surname but will keep digging.

Thanks again!

You always have to be a bit fluid with the spellings I'm afraid.  My Gooch family are down as Googe and Gouch and even my Middletons have been found under Myddleton

Good luck

Hi Jade,Sarah's parents were Thomas (1786-1865) & Hannah Ann (?1786-1859) Whyberd.Hannah's maiden name may possibly have been Whyberd and if this is the case then she and Thomas were cousins and both from Albury,Hertforsdhire.
Her grandparents were  John (1755-1840) and Sarah (b ?-1791) Whyberd (nee Smith)
Her great grandparents were Richard Wybard/Whybird and Ann (nee Clark) who were married in 1749 at Furneaux Pelham,Hertfordshire.
Sarah's siblings were
Thomas b 1809,married 1833 Rebecca Holland
John ( 1811-1880), married 1834 Sarah Ann Appleford. (My gt,gt,gt grandparents)
Lichfield (1813-1853) ,married Elizabeth Fensom
Susannah b 1818; married 1845 Thomas John Curd
Daniel b 1820,married 1) 1844 Susannah Say   2) 1850 Ellen Nevel (nee Cocking)
James (1823-1842)
Hannah  b1826,married 1847 Thomas Murray
Alfred b 1827,married 1848 Ann Elizabeth Murray Morris (*)

Many of the  later Whyberd's who settled in London were barge builders and shipwrights. As far as I know all the Whyberd's/Whybirds are related. There are many variants of the name which can make them hard to track down.
I hope this information helps.I have a large Whyberd family tree and am happy to share what information I have if you want to get in touch.Best wishes.Jane (Whyberd)
