'Open Here'
« on: Wednesday 20 May 09 21:41 BST (UK) »
Whilst looking around a local Inghamite graveyard recently I spotted this carved into an enormous horizontally laid memorial stone and I just had to take a picture!!

What would have happened if someone had tried to open it at the other end  :-\

Hi there

The 'Open Here' indicates that there is a vault underground that contains one or more coffins - very often if the vault has reached its capacity the word 'Closed' and possibly a date would be inscribed

Below that 'open here' sign is possibly a few steps for you to gain access to this vault - i.e the correct way in to add further coffins.

A vault that always makes me smile is the 'Tourle of Landport' vault in St John Sub Castro in Lewes - see picture below

Thanks for the explanation Chris.  It did make me smile though.
