Silo Family Lookup in Galway 1860's
« on: Wednesday 23 February 05 01:57 GMT (UK) »
If anyone has access to an index or listing of a census for Galway between 1861 and 1881 and can provide any further details for a George Louis Silo family address, occupation, children's ages etc, it would be greatly appreciated.

My gr-grandfather George Louis Silo travelled to North Leith Scotland to marry my gr-grandmother Lizzie Liddle in 1862 but Galway is listed as his place of residence rather than Belfast where the rest of the family resided.

Some of their children are listed in LDS as follows:

Modesto Silo born/christened November 15, 1864  0295 Galway, Ireland
Lizzie Josephine Silo b/c April 19, 1868 0302 Galway, Galway, Ireland
Eugenie Silo b/c August 11, 1870  Galway No. 2 (?), Galway, Ireland
Rosa Silo b/c January 8, 1872  Galway No. 2, Galway, Ireland

Several children are unaccounted for Lucy, Mary, Monica, Madeline and my grandfather George Louis Jr who was born June 10, 1874 but we don't know where.

Any enlightenment into the numerical references in the birth locations would be helpful too.

Hello surlie,

I looked at both the Flax Growers list of 1796 and Griffiths Valuation extracts for Galway (1855) on John Hayes failteromhat.com website. Neither list a head of household with the Silo surname.

The 1852 Directory of Belfast and Ulster lists ...

M. Silo, carver and gilder, 11, Arthur Square. Residence: 25, Gloucester St, Belfast

The Valuations offer the following ...

Andrew Silo, Pump Street, Derry, Templemore. Derry (1858-9)
Modesto Silo, Cromac Townparks, Upper Arthur Street, Shankill. Antrim (1861-2)
Modesto Silo, Cromac Townparks, Upper Arthur Street, Shankill. Antrim

1901 is the first complete census for Ireland and only fragments of earlier ones survive for certain areas. For County Galway there are bits of Loughrea for 1841 and 1851 apparently in National Archives.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

What denomination were the Maloney and Turner families, surlie? Since there are so few Census records available you may have to search Church records to learn more about the Silo family in Galway.
