« on: Thursday 21 May 09 15:17 BST (UK) »
Can some good detective help me sort this out.
Mary Pitcairn born 1 Sept 1800 Kirkintilloch (shown IGI) mar. William STEWART 1822 but no children shown in IGI but in IGI shows Mary PITCAIRN had children to Charles STEWART but no marriage. Is there 2 Mary's or ?.
Children to Charles/Mary:
William 1823
Mary    1825
Robert  1827
Archibald  1832
John         1838  (long distance between);
Would following census's show what is happening here.
Appreciate help

Hi Anderson,

Charles and Mary are living as man and wife in 1841. Could William and Charles be brothers? I'm sure there was a law against marrying your brother's widow at that time. May be wrong though. :-\

Address: Gray's Hill, Kirkintilloch, Dunbartonshire
Charles Stewart, m, 50, farmer, b. in county
Mary Stewart, f, 40, -, b. in county
William Stewart, m, 16, -, b. in county
Mary (jun'r) Stewart, f, 14, -, b. in county
Robert Stewart, m, 12, -, b. in county
Archd. Stewart, m, 8, -, b. in county
John Stewart, m, 3, -, b. in county
John Culbert, m, 16, male servant, b. outside county
Mary Marshall, f, 18, female servant, b. outside county

Here's the 1851 census for the family:

Address: Grayshill, Kirkintilloch, Dunbartonshire
Charles Stewart, head, mar., 75?, farmer of 44 acres, b. Kirkintilloch
Mary P. Stewart, wife, mar., 50, -, b. Kirkintilloch
William Stewart, son, unm., 27, farmer's son, b. Kirkintilloch
Mary Stewart, dau., unm., 25, farmer's daughter, b. Kirkintilloch
Robert Stewart, son, unm., 23, farmer's son, b. Kirkintilloch
Archibald Stewart, son, unm., 18, farmer's son, b. Kirkintilloch
John Stewart, son, unm., 11, farmer's son & scholar, b. Kirkintilloch
Rachel Carmichael, servant, unm., 20, house servant, b. Islay, Argyllshire
Ann Hamilton, servant, unm., 20, house servant, b. Lanarkshire

Will entry for Charles on SP:

Stewart   Charles   18/05/1854   of Grayshill, parish of Kirkintilloch, Dunbarton County, died Aug. 1853, husband of Mary Pitcairn       Dumbarton Sheriff Court   SC65/34/7

Mary died March 15th 1880 in Cadder. DC shows her the widow of Charles Stewart, landed proprietor, and the daughter of John Pitcairn, farmer (dec.) and Mary Pitcairn m.s. Gray (also dec.). Matches with the 1800 birth entry in Kirkintilloch. Death was registered by son-in-law, Jas. Chapman.

Another post - sorry!! :-[ ;D

Think William/Charles could be the same person, possibly a mistake on the marriage register for 1822. I checked the OPR of William's, b. 1823, birth/baptism and it lists him as the lawful son of Charles S. and Mary Pitcairn. Don't think she could have ran off with/married another man that quickly, especially in her home parish! ;D

I'm attaching the record. It would be interesting if anyone could read the smaller writing at the bottom. I can make out something about William being the first son child (right hand) and an 1822 date (middle), but no more.

Hi ev,

Can now see the "proclaimed" ... didn't realise it was the marriage date. ::) That does confirm it.

You would get a job with Scotland Yard Hume. So you think that William might be Charles marrying Mary ? Strange one. No wonder their kids were unmarried at their age. Who would want to leave home in those days with having acres & servants. I remember my mum saying that we had gypsies in our family. Wasn't this side.
Thanks again

Anderson,

I would definitely check out the OPR of the 1822 marriage. If Grayshill is mentioned, you would expect it to be the same person. I do think William's baptism entry confirms it though.

I looked for a possible birth for Charles. There's a discrepancy between his age on both censuses- maybe a bad case of rounding down the ages in 1841. :-\ Given son Archibald's name and a daughter Mary (although that may be from Mary Gray), this looks likely:

Charles Stewart, b. 29th August 1791 in Kirkintilloch - parents Archibald Stewart and Mary Boyd
