Hello Jorose

Bernt and Marthe Moe, arrived in Zululand, from Swaziland, where they lived for the rest of their lives.  Haven't yet got their death dates.

As accurately as possible, I think, they had four further children, all born near Tugela Ferry, Zululand, South Africa, possibly between 1898 - 1904:

  Karen Moe  -  1898?

  Fillip Moe    -   1900

  Johanne Moe  -  1902

  Lizzie Moe      -  1904

Both Karen and Johanne never married.  Fillip married Edith Constance Aitken.  Lizzie married Gustav Hallstrom, from Sweden, in Durban, South Africa.  All died, in and around Durban, South Africa.

Cheers

Hello Grandma

Thank you SO much to both you, and to you son!   ;D  ;D

I think you and he have worked out the Moes very well, it all seems pretty straightforward so far, fingers crossed, by some miracle we will somehow find out what Marthe's maiden surname was?   ???

It would be thrilling to find mention of Bernt Christian on one of the Censuses, with Bernt and  Serine as his parents???

I did see something somewhere, possibly on IGI which may date Bernt Christian's birth to round about 1857, but think that is to early, so it could perhaps be his father Bernt's?

Cheers

Hello Jorose

Having now had time to read the full precis from the link you sent on the biography of Petra Malena Moe, known for the rest of her life, as Malla Moe, what an amazing lady she is!

And, as you say, she also had connections to Chicago.  I believe its possible Malla Moe was a close relative of Bernt Christian Moe. Which of the two went out first to Swaziland, I don't know, I assume Bernt, and that it was a different, earlier Mission that he 'rescued'.

After he and Marthe and son and staff trekked south to Zululand, another mission must have been set up again.

Cheers

Hi Danchaslyn.

Looked up Hafslo, where Malla Moe was born and it,s a fair way away from Verdal, where we are assuming Bernt Christian was born. It,s in a different county all together. Though who knows, they still could be connected.

Hello Grandma

Thank you for looking up Hafslo............think that all these folk's attendance at their church is the mutual key, don't you?   ???

Their recruitment, either for Chicago, or to go out to Swaziland?   ::)  I feel sure that Marthe ?, could have been in the same congregation as Malla Moe, in Norway?

Have you possibly had a chance to read the whole link that Jorose posted about their mission work?

Cheers

Hello Jorose

In answer to your question about having any documentation for Bernt Christian Moe, the only item I have, and it is in storage, is his South African Naturalization Certificate, for the whole family, to become South African Citizens.

Unfortunately it didn't give the names of the parents, of either Bernt Christian Moe, or Marthe Moe, nee ?.

If only!!

Cheers

Okay, http://www.national.archives.gov.za/ is working for me again today.

There is a record for Moe, Bernt Kristian, (s/s Moe, Lise Mathea) (circa 1940-1943?), and another for Moe, Lise Mathea (1944).

These originate from the Pietermaritzburg Archives Repository - I strongly suggest you contact them as we don't seem to be having any luck finding a firm connection for this couple in Norway. There's also a deceased estate record indexed for Karen Moe (b. Zululand, unmarried).

Hello Jorose

Again, thank you so much for that.................you beat me to it, as I've been trying to get into N.A.A.I.R.S. without success.  ;)

Pietermaritzburg is the capital if you like for KZN, so their records would possibly give that district and not say, for instance, Tugela Ferry.   ::)

Please can you tell me the date of Karen's death, I guess it was round about 1964-8? Died Durban.

Fillip, I know, firsthand, died 14 May, 1975. Died Durban.

Lizzie died, roughly 1980-1995?  She would be listed as Lizzie Hallstrom. Died Port Shepstone.

Johanne died about 2 1/2mths short of her 100th Birthday, I think about May, 2002? Died near Port Shepstone.

Gustav Hallstrom, husband of Lizzie, died roughly, 1989-1992? Died Durban.

All of the above hosted both Norwegain and Swedish missionaries until their deaths.

Cheers

Hello Jorose

The death records for 'Bernt Kristian Moe' and Lise Mathea Moe, are I am sure, the exact ones we are looking for.  The dates would fit as well.

In South Africa, 'c'is not part of the Afrikaans language, so it would be an easy error for Christian to be recorded as, Kristian.  Most government departments, including obviously archives, would be staffed by Afrikaans speaking individuals in bygone days.

The wife of Bernt Christian was definitely known as Marthe, but I wonder if grandma can help us out here, and explain if 'Mathea' might have been her maiden surname?

Lise does vaguely ring a bell.  The example of Petra Malena Moe, being known as Malla Moe, has certainly given me the idea?!   ???

Your post is of great help.  I'm sure somewhere is a marriage record for Bernt Christian Moe, to Lise Mathea............    ::)  the more I think about, I feel they must have met at the mission station in Swaziland, and that "Marthe" was already one of the stranded ladies there and that Bernt was the knight in shining armour.   ;)

Cheers
