Monumental inscription for Kirkpatrick Durham:

Patrick McCartney of Upper Macartney d. 5 June 1815, aged 80
In memory of his wife Grizel McGeorge, d. 28 May 1775, aged 25
his widow Helen Paterson, d. 17 May 1821.

Helen, mother of John, was obviously Peter/Patrick's second wife.

Note that Peter and Patrick were used interchangeably in Scotland
Also, Hel(l)en and El(l)en.

James Hamilton was b. 30 Nov 1881, Mauchline, Ayrshire. His parents were James Hamilton, railway clerk (as the marriage cert) and Catherine m.s Petticrew (?) . James and Catherine were married June 10 1881, Mauchline.

James, snr's parents were James Hamilton, general labourer, and Agnes m.s Steele

Catherine's parents were Robert Petticrew, boxmaker, and Jane m.s. Paton*

*Do you think that your Badon came from a misheard Paton

I think you might be able to follow this line back on the censuses and IGI/SP now  :)
