Matthaeus von Rosthorn in Vienna
« on: Wednesday 27 May 09 16:24 BST (UK) »
In 1721 Matthew ROSTHORN was apparently born in Preston, Lancashire, England.  In 1765 he left England for Vienna at the invitation on the Empress Maria Theresa to establish the manufacture of metal buttons.  He went on to construct the first rolling-mills in Austria and in 1790 the Lancastrian engineer was enobled by Emperor Joseph II as Matthaeus von Rosthorn.  He was twice widowed and fathered 6 boys by 3 wives, with whom he founded an industrial dynasty.

Despite having details of his highly successful and influential family and their achievements in Austria, including a descendant family tree, I have not yet discovered any information regarding Matthew's birth in Preston, Lancashire, and I was wondering if there is likely to be any information in Austria that could help me locate who his parents were and whether he had any siblings.
