Great Hormead - BRIERLY
« on: Wednesday 27 May 09 19:49 BST (UK) »
Hi, I'm new to this, so I hope this is correct!!

I'm desperate for help in tracing info on my Great Aunt.  Born Evaline May Lockwood she married a Mr Brierly.  I cannot find where or when.  She published one book "A Story by Patch".  She then appears on a passenger list in 1959 and is a Company Director, living at "Ships Timbers, Hall Lane, Great Hormead, Buntingford".  I have found her in the telephone book up to 1961 and then nothing.  I cannot find anything for her marriage or death!!  I also do not know who her husband was, although my Mum believes he investigated fires for an insurance company.  Companies House cannot look up directors unless they have a company name.  I am going to visit Great Hormead next month, but does anyone have any ideas on where else I can look? Thank you very much for reading this.  ::)

Hi Nanny Jan

No, Evaline was born in Jamaica in 1904.  Her Dad, my GGF was in the army.  When they returned, they lived in Pembrokeshire, so I don't know how she ended up in Hertfordshire!! ???

Hi,

Could Evaline have married abroad?   Do you know when they returned?

Hi Nanny Jan

They returned in 1912, when my GGF left the army.  They settled in Cosheton.  My GGF returned to France during WWII but returned to Cosheton to my GGM.

So Evaline would have been 8 when they returned.  As I haven't found her on any more incoming passenger lists, I assumed they married in this country.  She was Mrs Brierly when she wrote the book about 1949.  Did they marry abroad in those days?

Thanks for your help

Hi,

Have you checked the full GRO index for either her marriage or death?  However that only has English and Welsh records.

The passenger list for 1959;  is she travelling with her husband?  Was she returning from Jamaica? Perhaps her husband was in the Army or with a Government office abroad; which could mean she married there.

When is her first listing in the telephone directory?

Sorry it's all questions .............

Hi,

Yes I have a subscription for Ancestry.com, so have looked.  She was born and lived in Jamaica only because her father was stationed her.  No husband in the passenger list and no one else with the same address as her.  Looks like she was just on holiday, or perhaps business, to Las Palmas.  Yes I thought her husband might have been in the services.  I have trawled through service records, but I don't know his first name, in fact, I don't know his dob or where he was born.

Her first listing in the telephone directory is 1959, then 1960 and finally 1961.

Thank you for your help, any ideas are gratefully received :)
