Bristol - where was Ash Lodge COMPLETED
« on: Thursday 28 May 09 12:54 BST (UK) »
I have an ancestor who was living in Ash LOdge, Temple, Bristol in the 1901 census. I cannot find this on any map. The site may have been bombed in the war and/or redeveloped. Does anyone know where it was?

I have a cd of a Kelly's directory in 1938 and it mentions Ash Lodge.  There is an entry for 67 Temple back for Stoate & Sons, Temple Mills.  Then it says Avon St intersects and Ash Lodge intersects.  Next is JC Hall warehouse, Pickfords Storage, Temple Technical School.

There is no separate entry for Ash Lodge and its not on a map now.  Around there there has been a lot of redevelopment and now has big office blocks.

Thanks.

That means it was still there in 1938 so I should be able to find on 1938 map.

I think this area was badly bombed in the World War II just after so this ties in.

I've looked on a cd for 1894 and the place is entered on its own.  There were only 3 people entered there, a slipper maker a provision director and a free stone cutter.

Seems like a small place.

Hi Liz

I have a map of Bristol for 1902 - Ash Lodge, as Nameless says, runs off Temple Back, towards Temple Chuch yard. It appears to have very few houses in it - mostly larger buildings (factories etc?). It seems to peter out near the churchyard with a group of smaller properties in a small square.
if you'd like a sight of the area on this map send me a PM with your email & I'll send it on to you

Thanks for this. I have sent PM with email address. My family was living in 1 Ash Lodge in 1901. Census shows them as having three rooms. I have not access to census today but I remember when I checked that there were several houses with factories nearby in same road. So this information all ties up. Families would have been quite poor - mine was dock worker and others were general labourers.

I've just discovered this thread after googling the address "ASH LODGE".

My 4x great grandparents were living in 3 Ash Lodge in 1852. They were Moses and Caroline Wertheim. Moses was Prussian; Caroline was born Bristolian. He was listed as a traveller here.

So there were at least three addresses at this place, if that is any help :)
