does it mean they were not church of Scotland
« on: Thursday 04 June 09 02:05 BST (UK) »
HI; I have an unusual family of the common name Smith. I have posted before but now add more details. John Smith born circa 1827 Kelso Roxburgh married Jane Mains, born circa 1821 same place. They had sons Robert S. John, and William all born in England, and daughters Christina and Janet both born in Edinburgh.  I have the family on 1841 census, 1851, census. Jane died 1853 and I even found her death on the OPRs giving her maiden and married name.

I have searched the IGI, SP, Free BMD for Scotland and England, and findmypast for a marriage but have found none.  Would this mean that they were not the established church of Scotland so SP would not have transcribed it yet?

I found my GG grandma ( their daughter Christina)and brother William  but not the others. I just want to find them in later censuses. John was still alive according to the notation for Christina's marriage in 1868 to James Duncan in Glasgow.

Just wondering if there is any significance in this absence of information.  Donna

Any advise would be appreciated.

Hi icini,

The moderators may decide to move your post soon, as Edinburgh comes under Midlothian rather than East Lothian. :) However, for now, I think I have found John and family in 1861:

Address: 352 Castle Hill, Edinburgh, Midlothian
John Smith, head, mar., 38, tailor journeyman, b. Kelso
Margaret Smith, wife, mar., 42, -, b. Kelso
Robert S. Smith, son, unm., 15, brass founder apprentice, b. England
John Smith, son, unm., 13, messenger, b. England
Christina Smith, dau., unm., 12, scholar, b. Edinburgh
Janet Smith, dau., unm., 10, scholar, b. Edinburgh

Thank you for your reply Hume. I guess Margaret is the new wife ( although I have found no positive  proof of marriage for them either).  Maybe if they move it I will get more answers re church.   Thanks again.  Donna

Hi again Donna,

When you say you have them in 1841, do you mean together in a household? If so, I would think that rather early especially as first child looks to be born c. 1846 or so.

I think I have found them apart in 1841, so looking at a marriage between '41 and c. '46 possibly in Kelso or in England.

Address: -, Kelso, Roxburghshire
Janet Smith, f, 50, J Taterer, b. in county (Occupation noted on Freecen as difficult to decipher)
Andrew Smith, m, 20, ropemaker (journeyman), b. in county
John Smith, m, 17, tailor (apprentice), b. in county
George Smith, m, 15, tailor (apprentice), b. in county
William Smith, m, 12, -, b. in county
Edward Smith, m, 10, -, b. in county

Address: Roxburgh Street (East Side), Kelso, Roxburghshire
Christian Sutherland, f, 40, independent, b. in county
Robert Sutherland, m, 20, slater (apprentice), b. in county
Jane Main, f. 20, dressmaker, b. in county
John Sutherland, m, 15, slater (apprentice), b. in county
Agnes Sutherland, f, 45, independent, b. in county
Robert Davidson, m, 15, skiner (apprentice), b. in county

Hi: Sorry I meant to enter 1851 census. I also had an 1841 census for Smiths but yours looks to be more accurate, and I didn't have the Jane Main census at all.  Thanks Hume
