Address in Hull?
« on: Saturday 06 June 09 23:28 BST (UK) »
My great-grandfather's death certificate - not at the address his family recognised. Can anyone read it please?

I'm hoping to do an address search in 1911 census to see if he was living there then (he's not with the rest of the family so it's a bit of a mystery!)

Thanks everyone.
Lesley

Thanks, Evie. That's what I thought, but I'm not having any success in my 1911 search, so I thought I must be misreading it. According to the certificate it's in the district of Hessle. There is a Wells St in Newington - does anyone know if that is the same thing as Hessle (I don't know Hull at all, so would be glad of local knowledge).
Thanks again.

There's a photo of a house in Wells Street, Anlaby Road, Hull. The street is described as a short terraced street between Arthur Street and the railway line.
http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1293407

You'll find an alphabetical list of Hull Streets taken from  an 1892 directory.  Arthur Street is shown which has a few smaller streets coming off it - maybe one of those terraces had a name change.    Look in "Directories" on this webpage:-

Good luck

In 1881: Newington was a Civil Parish covered by the Registration District of Sculcoates and the sub Registration District of Hessle.

Here's a pic of a modern day For Sale notice of a House in Wells Street Hull.
It's near Anlaby Road

And a better one, with a good link to view a map of the area
http://www.beercockwiles.co.uk/content/001_Property_Search/Search_Results/Property_Details/property-sales-bcwrps-ANL080103

Here's a web site with a history of Anlaby Road - Hessle certainley mentioned!
http://www.anlabyroad.com/history/anlabyroadhist01.html
http://www.anlabyroad.com/menupage.html
Though Wells Street is not mentioned in the database of the North & South side streets.....

edit: added:
Arthur Street runs more or less parallel to and south of,  Anlaby Road.....it looks like :  Wells St is  a very small street running south off Arthur Street.  Travelling north up Wells, it  intersects with Arthur St   then  the roading continues north toward Anlaby Rd as "Sandringham Street"  (the latter is in the database of South Side streets off Anlaby Road)

Google Maps UK -  + zoom right in - looks as if 14 Wells is the large house on the east corner of Wells and Arthur (if looking up Wells toward Arthur).

I guess you can tell - I agree, and think the address on the cert is 14 Wells  ;D

As for Hessle:
Hessle Road, Hull, leads to the small town of Hessle where the Fish dock is/was

and Anlaby Road leads to the small town of Anlaby

both places probably now swallowed up by the city of Hull

Cheers,
Rena

Are you looking for a particular name in 1911?
Booth, Hornsby, Northumberland & Durham

That's amazing - thank you all for your help. I've used up all my 1911 credits and was a bit unsure about buying more to look up Wells Street in Newington if it was a completely different area.  Anlaby Road does come up on other certificates from the family - so that convinces me that you've found the right address. I'm going to look up these links now (though I don't know whether the google one works without broadband).

If I find my ggf in the house in Wells St it will suggest that the couple were separated - something which solves a mystery, though was definitely covered up by my granddad.

Thank you all again.
