Weaste Cemetery - "Diss" Burial Plots

A group of my ancestors are buried in a plot marked as "Diss". I assume this means Dissenter, as others are labelled CofE and RC.

Does anyone know what criteria would cause this? Would they have been practising members of a Non-Conformist church or just not baptised as CofE?

I had read your post and have thought long and hard about this......

This is my thoughts......yes I think you are quite correct in thinking that Diss means Dissenter.

Dissenter as I understand it means having a strong opinion against the rule, in this case the Church of England. A Methodist would be I guess in this group....

I do not see it as a negative but someone of strong ideals. You only have to look at all the Chapels and Churches in the area to get an idea on the mix of cultures and religions.

It suggests that if I want to find baptisms etc, I should try non CofE Registers.

Some of my recent ancestors were Methodists, but I hadn't thought the older ones were. I was a bit confused because these people married at the Cathedral, but it's possible that the bride's family were the "Dissenters".
