Margaret Burns born in Penang about 1861
« on: Wednesday 10 June 09 21:31 BST (UK) »
Can anyone tell me if it's possible to find a birth for Margaret Burns in Penang or a marriage for her around 1886 to Andrew Sharp Taylor

I would like to know who her parents were and if she had any siblings.

The earliest date I can find her is in the 1891 Census RG12/4229/24/4; - I have her as Margaret Taylor, wife of Andrew Sharp Taylor -

Andrew Sharp Taylor 29  Head - North Shields - Commercial Traveller
Margaret Taylor 30  Wife - Penang, East Indies
Ernest Sharp Taylor 4  Son - North Shields
Wilfred Burns Taylor 3  Daug - North Shields
Ethel Taylor 5/12  Daug - North Shields
Lizzie Dixon 24  Servant - Felling, Durham
Ada Thorn 14  Nurse - Hull

I can't find her marriage but I know her maiden name from her son's birth certificate.

Thanks

According to the 1911 Census she had been married 25 years... so her marriage must have been around 1886. But where is it?

Maybe it was in Scotland ;)

Margaret appears on 1871/1881 Census with her Mother Jane + siblings in Scotland.

Jane.S. Burns, born abt 1830, Sth Shields,Durham
Margret 10 and sister Jane.S. 12, both born Penang.
Younger siblings Wm.7 and Mary 5 born Edinburgh.

1881 Margaret is a Governess, still living with Mother, aged 20.

Birth cert. of one of younger children should give Jane.S.Burns maiden name. I would guess Mr. Burns was a William from only sons name.

1891 Margaret is not at home and a Christina Burns, sister in law is living with Jane.S. snr.

I tried to follow her and it is possible William Burns, born 1829, Edinbugh is a Minister. This could explain Penang connection.
1851 Scotland Census there is a William 22 with sister Christina 18 and parents. William is a Divinity Student
I havent typed up census refs. as I am not used to Scottish ones but they are easy to find :D

If you need help finding them just ask.

Wow, You're a genius Trish,

Never thought of looking in Scotland as I was distracted by her birth place.

Anyone know if it's possible to find births in Penang?

Thanks again

Thank you, stroke of good luck ;D

1881 Census;

Andrew is at home with his parents. His father is a wholesale druggist and he is a DRYSALTER ??? ( had to google it-someone who deals in chemicals,glue,varnish,dyes,etc and could be involved with a chemist/druggist)

RG11/5081/83/5

As he was a commercial traveller by 1891 census I would look for the marriage in Scotland.

I have no idea how to look for births in Penang, but it is definitely her on Census in Scotland so would spend a bit on Scotlandspeople and download one of her siblings birth certs to get Mother Janes maiden name and Fathers first name and occp.

Marriage of Andrews parents;

John TAYLOR
Mary SHARP (on same page)
March 1861
Tynemouth 10b 271

Birth;
Andrew Sharp TAYLOR, June 1862, Tynemouth, 10b_43

Thanks Trish,

You've given me the breakthrough I needed as I've been stuck on this for years. I've got the Taylor line back to the early 1600's

I still can't find a marriage on Scotlandspeople but have found lots on IGI - Margaret's sister Mary Burns is recorded as b. 9.1.1866 in Edinburgh - parents William Burns and Sarah Jane Keedy.

Sarah Jane Keedy m William Burns 18.6.1858 in Edinburgh. As their first child, Jane S Burns is born in Penang in 1859 I wondered if anyone could find them on a shipping list in 1858 or returning possibly around 1865, just before Mary Burns was born.

http://books.google.com
Search for "William Burns" Penang
 In 1859-ish, as the Rev. Charles Moir had gone to Victoria, the Rev. William Burns had replaced him in Penang (the book was issued in 1859, Rev and Mrs Burns had sailed "last summer").

If you look at the Scotland's People, they have some information on the "Foreign Returns", which may list her:
