*completed*Finch Street Whitechapel Mile End New Town 1871
« on: Friday 12 June 09 17:43 BST (UK) »
Seeking this road on 1871 census, so far without much luck. I have a birth cert for Anna Maria Luch , father Henry (Heinrich) and mother, Elizabeth (nee Lather) for 1862. Although the girl died two years later I am wondering whether the parents still live there in 1871? Address is curiously shown as "22 and a half" Finch Street on the cert and also on the sugar refiners data base.
Thanks
 Taylor Wallace

Hi
This road does appear under an address search on FindMyPast but unfortunatley the houses are not numbered and it seems to have been a very long road! I'll have a bit of a dig about.

The only Luchs that are appearing in London in the 1871 are Thomas (1817) his wife Sarah (1829) and their two daughters Elizth aged 12 and Emma aged 3. They are at South St Marylebone.

Hi again

Success but no good to you I'm afraid. The occupants of 22 1/2 Finch Street were a family called Jacobs. I can't make out his name but the wife was Rebecca Jacobs and their sons were Abraham, John, Rubin and David. He was a general dealer.

Thanks for that, even if it just rules it out. heinrich Luch and his wife Elizabetha nee Lather anglicized their name to Luke and their son Goodhart (originally Gottheid) born in Whitechapel in 1860 was my gt grandfather. I have never found him on 1871 either so looks as though they were missed off. It looks as though he was effectively their only child, as Anna Mara died aged 2. I thought I had found a long list of siblings from 1881//1891 census with the names Henry/Elizabeth Lack/Leck/ Leek as parents,  also from Germany but became suspicious and sent for a random three birth certs only to find they were totally different parents! Always good to verify mother's maiden name!

Hi, They are not at 22 Finch Street in 1861. Can not spot them although they married in 1859 in Whitechapel?

... Address is curiously shown as "22 and a half" Finch Street ...

As I discovered from an earlier post of mine, 22 1/2 suggests a house divided into two apartments.

Again, not much help in your search I'm afraid.

In 1861 they are in St. Giles although father appears as Jas rather than Henry. The enumeratoer was very economical with his amount of detail in occupation, origin etc so getting fathers name wrong doesnt surprise me. I traced it through Goodhart which is not very common.
